First rain in LA as well! Kind of put a damper (har har har, i c wot u did thur) on Halloween, but I think the drought-parched hillsides were ever so happy. Now I'm heading out to Hollywood for the Dia de los Muertos festival – hopefully we won't get too much of a downpour. Sending lots of love to all those thinking of their departed. Take the time to cherish their life and your memories.

And I'm super proud of all you guys. I'm ready for everyone to get their acceptances and to move on to their second look celebrations. Hope the wait is shorter than expected. 😀

PS: I can't wait to meet @sunflower18 this month!

Take that excitement and multiply it by 10 so that it will be at a suitable level to match her greatness!

She's amazing!!! And I'm sure you are too if your online persona is anything to go by 😉 With your coupled awesomeness I'm sure you'll get along famously!

Regrets that I didn't apply 🙁 *bangs forehead* Silly starfish! Silly, silly, silly!

First rain?! Gah if only the Northwest was so lucky!! There have been constant downpours here for the past two weeks. Every summer I forget the misery of sprinting across the mud-splattered campus while sheets of water drench your clothing, and then it all hits me (literally) again in the fall.... Ah well. I guess we wouldn't have greenery without a little bit of hydration!

Blushing so much!!!! You guys are ridiculously sweet, and so wonderful aahhh :biglove:

I'm beyond excited to meet the famous @hellanutella as well -- I'm sure I will be humbled and awed merely by being in her presence 🙂

Sunday, November 2: Remote-Controlled Penguin
A remote-controlled roving camera is camouflaged as an emperor penguin chick in Adelie Land, Antarctica. The device enables researchers to approach and study the naturally shy birds. The robot is so convincing that penguins don't scamper away and sometimes even sing to it with trumpet-like sounds.

Wow, so they don't even notice those huge-ass wheels on the robot. -_____-

Anyone taking off on a pre-med school holiday this spring/summer?

I'm slowly coming to accept the fact that I will be in debt up to my eyeballs once med school is over, so what is a little vacation to garnish off a mountain of debt? I'm formally ending my job at the end of April, and I have some friends going to SE Asia in May and another group backpacking through the Mediterranean in June. Decisions, decisions....

That's my plan as well.

Currently thinking SE Asia (have friends that did it on the cheap), India (grew up there and lots of family and friends), or Ethiopia (have some family there).

SE Asia or India are most likely. I want to go backpacking...

This is going to sound terrible, but countries hit by the economic downturn slash austerity are good destinations as well since they'll be cheap i.e. Greece.

I have connections throughout Europe so maybe backpacking there...Or a Mediterranean cruise. Depends on how lazy I'm feeling:laugh:

My plan as well (praying nothing unusual comes up)! I'll definitely visit my friends again in the Northeast (NY and NJ) and have some friends and connections in Europe, so I'll do my best to plan a trip there as well.. maybe a Scandinavian adventure, hmm. Lots of possibilities, and I'm eager to take a trip for pure enjoyment and adventure. I've also been dying to spend a quiet week or even month in a tiny cottage by the sea (perhaps up in Maine or something), so if I find an inexpensive way to do that, that's where I'll be! I get chills just thinking about the beauty, charm, and solitude.

PS: I would see what plane tickets are like from SE Asia to wherever your other group of friends will be in June! Maybe you could do a big trip all at once.

My work pays out unused vacation days. Outside of 4 days for thanksgiving and other interview days, I'm planning on saving all the vacation I can possibly take. I work enough during the week that I end up with more hours and can leave early or come in late some days, so it all works out.

So far I have 3 interviews and estimate I'll end up using 4-5 days for them. I hope to end up with atleast 2 weeks of paid vacation time for when I leave!

Crossing my fingers I can go on a post interview spring trip as well as do something over the summer. One of my best friends is in London right now and I'm really hoping to go hang out with her for a few days and explore.

Oh god, don't do the cruise. Half the fun of Europe is cavorting through the streets at night, going to discotheques, and staying up late in coffeehouses. And siestas.

Or maybe I'm a freak, because I hate having a structured vacation. You can't tell me what to do!

I am for sure backpacking in Southern Europe and SEA this summer! The thought of fun and freedom ahead is getting me through the uncertainty of the application process 🙂

Both? YOU LUCKY PENGUIN, YOU! That's awesome! 😀

Sweet! Never been to Maine, but I hear it's picture-perfect. I'd save Scandinavia for the summer (June, July) as it's the only time the weather is remotely tolerable. Plus, many Europeans cash in their mandatory vacation time (of course, depends on the country) during August, so some places will shut down around then.

Unfortunately, these are two friend groups that have no overlap. I'd ideally want to do SE Asia in the spring before monsoon season comes in.... :dead:Thinking about Thai food is making me super hungry now.

Maine is lovely! I've been Bar Harbor and Portland in the past, and I'm eager to explore more of it. Good advice on Scandinavia for sure -- although it's not really considered Scandinavia, I've been in Finland around late March to early April, and it was pretty cold and still snowy in some places. However, it was a refreshing cold and after a winter in Russia I think I could handle some more cold... but hopefully I can avoid it with some strategic planning! I also love Eastern Europe and with the inexpensive plane tickets and myriad of trains available in Europe, it's hard not to get carried away traveling from one country to another.

Sorry that the two trips aren't overlapping! However, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice! God, Thai food is heavenly. I have a good friend from Thailand, and her family makes dishes that are absolutely mouthwateringly delicious! And so spicy -- I can't get enough of it!

Ahhhhh you guys are making me super jealous with these spectacular plans! I definitely want to do SOMETHING travel related but I don't have anyone to go with.... I'm a lame duck hahaha

Hey, WE can visit you! Or plan an awesome hiking and food adventure around the Pacific Northwest -- or anywhere! Who's down for this?! (Remember, HP land is still on the table 😀)

Ah the talk of all this travel makes me jealous! I really want to do something exciting, but I don't know if I will have the funds after this application cycle 🙁

*Edit* @sunflower18 we should make our OWN Backpacking trip.

For now, this is all so theoretical for me! I'm hoping it works out with finances and in terms of timing with other people! But, I hope you get to take a small trip somewhere!! It would be a lovely way to celebrate a hard year and the beginning of a new era in our lives.

You should think about traveling alone, its the best ever! I did it last year in South America, and as a female, felt safe at all times! Also, I met people in hostels every day who I ended up traveling with, so I was literally never alone! I'll be traveling alone next summer as well 😀

That sounds like a lot of fun! I don't know if I want to go to overseas alone this year (too many people I want to catch up with before school begins again), but it's what I'm planning for my solitary stay by the sea! I love the idea of having a schedule entirely your own, but with the potential to meet cool people everyday if you wish. Where are you traveling next summer?

Ahh there's so much traveling I want to do!! I've been trying to save up for a major trip to sail from Chile to Antarctica, but there are so many smaller trips that I want to take in between! Maybe I need to be a traveling wilderness physician!

That sounds like a really awesome experience!! But.... I don't know, I'd rather go on a trip with friends! I think that'd be super fun.

I desperately want go to to HP world omg.... And @spockprime oh my gosh yes! Come visit me!! The Pacific Northwest is awesome!!! Or I'll come to y'all. SDN adventure!

Ahh me too!! All of my friends have taken multiple trips down there at this point, and I'm still eagerly anticipating my first real butterbeer and glimpse of the Hogwarts castle! I would love to visit you!! And you're welcome to join me in Kentucky or join in on a roadtrip! Haha perhaps we can drive around, picking up all of the SDNers and having adventures along the way. But seriously, I want to use my free time to the fullest, so a PNW trip would be INCREDIBLE.

All of these ideas sound utterly brilliant!!!!!

Sorry to interject with something serious, but I'm really not feeling this EVMS interview on 12/3. They're big on primary care but that's not what I want to do in the slightest. Do y'all think I should cancel now or wait a little longer for a maybe acceptance from ECU or UNC? Also, I'm tired of dead silence from the other 14 schools I applied to. Can someone show me how to write a proper update letter? Is there a basic template I can use? I would be telling them the total number of hours worked as an ED scribe and expanding upon the description of the job I gave them in my AMCAS by elaborating on how it's been so meaningful to me, relevant clinical experience, etc.

For the update letter - I wrote one myself recently, and I used this helpful post as a general guide.

From what I've read, it's best to go to every interview you have until you have at least one acceptance in your hands. Then, you can withdraw your app with more confidence. I'm firmly convinced that you'll have amazing success this cycle (hopefully at your top choice, UNC!), but the question does come down to this: if you only get accepted to EVMS for some reason, would you rather go there and succeed to the best of your ability (note that you CAN still do your own thing even if the school is a big name in primary care) or apply again for only the possibility of attending a different school? I would personally go to every interview until you have that acceptance! Plus, there's still a month between now and 12/3, so you have time to hear back from your schools and make a decision then. Better wait than regret a hasty choice!

As for update letters, I've had some luck researching those via google and adding "sdn" to my searches. Also, some mdapps pop up with good examples. Some I've found with a quick search so far:

http://mdapplicants.com/profile.php?id=9582 (scroll all the way to the bottom, there are a lot of letters in this one!)
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...ank-you-withdrawal-correction-status.1003166/

I'll post more if I find anything else that might be useful!

I'm pretty sure EVMS med students match to things other than primary care residencies.

Go to the interview unless you're accepted somewhere you like more.

I'm saving 30% of this year's pitiful income for a SE Asia trip!! Hit up Singapore (infinity pool?! giants trees like a scene out of Avatar?!) and Thailand (elephant sanctuaries! temples!) and then to Taiwan for a month or so to visit the extended fam + S/O's extended fam. I'm drooling just thinking of the food

^^^^^ THIS WAS THE 10,000th POST!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL THE EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙈

Just wanted to pop in to say that I've been watching the post counter the past few days hoping to snag this spot, but alas, I was at work this afternoon and unable to do so... But I do think it is HIGHLY appropriate that our fearless leader @sunflower18 snagged the 10,000th post!!!! 😉

P.S. - I love the fact that the 10,000th post mentions HP world :soexcited:

I withdrew from EVMS less than a week before my interview. It wasn't my best move but better than wasting their time. So don't rush anything yet. You definitely want to go to every interview until you are accepted.
Officially part of the class of 2019 😉
Congrats!!!!:highfive::biglove: So happy for you!!!!!
