Definitely enjoy the weather while you're visiting! I like to say that California has two seasons - really-freaking-hot and not-so-hot - and November has kindly moved us into the latter for a short while.
Haha so true. Thanks differentiating!I've been here many times throughout the past year, the two seasons are marked by how people dress. The "wear-as-little-as possible" season and the "wear-whatever-the-heck-they-want" season. Now it's the season where people comes out in tank top, UGG boots or leather/down jacket with super shorts. I definitely have more fun dressing up on this coast, lots of ways to experiment.

While you are all riding the happiness cloud of acceptances, do your future self a favor -- buy a slowcooker / crockpot! You won't have as much time as med students to make food, and slowcooking is a great way to make delicious food without much attention.

Apologies in advance, because I will post this request on several threads. Now that I know that at least one med school is blind to my faults and willing to take me in, I'm planning what I'd like to do before my new chapter in life begins. I would really like to volunteer in Asia, but don't want one of the "volunteer vacation" deals. I'm not set on working in a medical setting--after all, I don't really qualify yet--but I would like to do something useful, even if the useful is, as Mother Teresa said, "not great things, but small things with great love." With the big med school expenses coming up (and all the application and interview expenses already incurred!), I can't afford to pay out to one of those programs that charges hefty fees. I would really like to hear from anyone with suggestions about non-teaching opportunities. (I am not a good teacher, and my heart really is set on Asia--East, South, whatever.) Please, please let me know if you have an idea of where I should start looking--or better yet, if you know someone I can contact personally! Thank you!

I wish I had a better answer than let me see if I can find something 😉

@FriendlyFH, you are so funny! I hope you enjoy LA to the fullest even on crutches! Oh, and I think you'd be a FABULOUS Soros candidate.

@hellanutella, You too!!! You're so modest. Some folks only have interesting research experiences. I say give it a shot! You can apply in M1 or M2 as well.

And thank you 😳 It is what it is, however. It is such a small world! Last year, a girl from Harvard Med who won the Soros fellowship turned out to be my Dad's friend's daughter. My dad and her dad were residency buddies.

And you are right -- immigration is a taxing process. I am very privileged and grateful that I did not have to endure what my parents had to. I am very conscious of the struggle my parents faced to bless me with this land of opportunity.

I am in LA, so much to do, but while on crutches, all I can do is to eat. Anybody here wants to eat/meet/drink/hangout/enjoy the weather with me? I can reach anywhere in the great LA region until I leave on the 20th.

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit, but my good mood has everything to do with being a confirmed member of class 2019.

Dude, my work schedule has been all over the place, but I should be free on the evening of the 18th and/or 19th. Mi coche es tu coche, so I'm game for hitting up any of the neighbourhoods.

AND I'M SO STOKED TO CHAUFFEUR @sunflower18 AROUND IN LESS THAN A WEEK.

@Boolean great idea! It's going on the ever-growing Amazon wishlist.

So random and such good idea. Lol

I came across the idea when I was studying immuno earlier and trying to cook dinner and check up on SDN every now and then. I audibly said "Wow, if only I could just cook this slower"

A few hours later, I now am the proud owner of a slow cooker. I figured others may benefit from my experience 😛

Ann Arbor is totally on the way from Oregon to Los Angeles, right???? 😉

I was actually only a 2.5 hour drive away from you earlier this week, looks like 🙁 I want to meet you! So frustrating that none of our visits have overlapped!!!
If only they had some way of talking via video and sound over the internet, it would come in handy for you all 😛

Wheee for school, yes. IRL I'm a northeasterner 🙂 haha
But this means my anonymity has been relatively successful 🙂

Indeed it has!!! My anonymity has been a complete bust hahaha but whatever, I'm not ashamed of what I say on here or anything 🙂

and yes I would obviously love to meet you as well!!! Too bad Baylor is not interested in me, so I have no excuse to visit Texas 🙁 but I mean it -- SDN meet-up this summer would be AMAZING.

@claduva94 @No Limits IT'S ON.

@spockprime I'm so glad we are able to contribute to your happiness!! You're awesome and I'm so glad you're a part of our community! 🙂

Thank you, it's so awesome to be a part of it and to know you guys!! 🙂 I hope I will eventually meet all of you! Edit: And count me in on this Mario Kart tournament. It's on!

Yes. And she's all talk. We would win. Of course I prefer team play anyway...😛
Haha, idk deep down I think @sunflower18 is a hustler. She plays the warm and fuzzy role pretty well but don't be fooled. I know she's a fierce competitor on the inside. In a couple years we will see her post about how she's worried she wont do well on step 1... She will then match into a integrated plastics residency at MGH the following year lol.

Team play sounds great. We could play for cookies and school supplies!!

Remember, only she can wield the Sunflower Sword!

Playing for cookies makes this very very serious 😀

Random Factoid:

In English the meaning of the name Ace is: Unity; a nickname given to one who excels. Also from the English word meaning "highest rank."

Khalifa is an Arabic honorific title meaning successor; or one who succeeds.

Congrats @Ace Khalifa on an another interview!!!!!!!!!! The dance party continues!!!

I enjoyed immuno as an undergrad. The material was a blast.
Maybe a centroblast...

I don't particularly mind it, but the tests are always at the least opportune time and the tests are mostly minutiae (i.e. what was said in obscure diagram on obscure page of obscure book that was briefly mentioned)

Totally did not make my SDN name based on that.....but interesting nonetheless lol.

In other news, I love Taylor Swift's new album 1989!! Been listening to it non-stop all weekend when I had 3 days off from work.

Blank Space is my new anthem.
My roommate has been playing it on repeat which is weird since he normally only listens to hipster/indie music. But then again, based on his past love-interests, he is into the crazies and she certainly is a little bit crazy in that video. So maybe that's it. I certainly like it better than Shake it Off.
