I'm thinking about writing a letter to a school I interviewed at but haven't heard back from... I really don't have anything to update as my grades won't be that amazing and I have had a pretty busy/stressful semester and done basically nothing but study and travel to interviews. I just want to be like, "Hey, I like you, you like me, let's get together." Can I just send a letter of interest saying how they are a top choice yada yada without really updating anything? Have any of you done this?

I would atleast update them on some activities or such, but I think it's a good idea to do what you're thinking. How long has it been?

Been MIA for a few days and boy did I miss some AMAZING news!!!!!

Just a shoutout that @researchismymiddlename is awesome and her list of questions will be so incredibly helpful to me.

I'm psyched to put a bunch of thought into this over the next few weeks. This is great for me because I like seeing my thoughts on paper. I guess I've been trying to work against myself lately.

SO PUMPED!

Glad I could help  :luck: You'll do incredibly well!! 😀

Haha yup! I now know [I thinkkkkk] who @researchismymiddlename is and who you are. Wheeee!!!

OMG really?!?! But... how?! 😀

Just rejected from cornell.

🙁 Sorry to hear that... and to @onceawolverine and @ProbablyAPenguin, I'm sorry to hear about the JHU waitlist but they've lost two great applicants if you aren't accepted there! Besides, you both have some out of this world decisions to make in April even without JHU in the picture 🙂

Haha, you had me at cookies🙂

Congrats to all those who got accepted to Case, you guys are rock stars!! I'm not sure how they can pass over HellaNutella and Claduva though:nono: Also, congrats to Lamel on the NYU II

OMG!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Sunflower already knows this, but she has the exact same first/last name as one of my best friends (same full initials too)... so I've accidentally sent my totally non-medically related friend some very odd texts. x____x I got a message back yesterday from her going "dafuq is Case?"

I ended up putting the sunflower emoji next to your name in my phone! No more confusion!

Awhh booo @ridethecliche! 🙁 Not a fan of the rejection sprees Cornell and SF have been on. Glad you've got another NYC interview coming up.

LOL! That is hilarious!!

On that note, last week I got rejected by UCSF as well 🙁 Oh well, so long dreams of California 😉

I've been similarly surprised at how every single argument devolves into a ticky-tacky argument over who-made-which-logical-fallacy. It's a deep shame that some members would so much rather try to poke holes in the logical flow of an internet post, rather than actually digest the message that is being conveyed. It's as though a few members are playing this secret game in which the objective is to find the most (minor) issues in others' arguments. For all their wisdom and experiences in other areas, I've noticed that a few of the more "senior" posters take a certain amount of pleasure in diminishing an opponents "argumentation strategy," a practice best left to debate club and dysfunctional relationships. Frankly, their habitual, incessant "nit-picking" is every bit as "derailing" to a thread as a full-blown troll is. But at least trolls don't continually revert to this self-righteous "I know more than you do because I'm a real doctor now." It's a lazy disguise for an inability to digest a contradictory viewpoint, and I'm glad that so few are fooled by it.

EDIT: Sorry @Silverflash , I won't say another word 😛

I'm going to remember that for the rest of my life. Brilliantly said.

Haha, the worst is when you study for weeks and feel super ready for the exam. Then when you get to the first question you're like...
Kenan-SNL-Millionaire.jpg

OMG OMG OMG did you know this reduced me to a 5 minute spiel of laughter?!?!? Hilarious!!!

THANK YOUUUUU. (NGL, kind of a whole mess of feels at the moment). This is just unreal. Good luck to @ProbablyAPenguin and @onceawolverine, though I'm pretty sure their apps were a slam dunk.

Sorry about the Case news, but OMG... JHU?!?!? CONGRATULATIONS my humble hella would-love-to-meet-you someday friend!!! That's amazing!!!!! Wow!

And of course so many congratulations to @sunflower18 and @ProbablyAPenguin and @youmeandthesea and @onceawolverine on Case!! I'm so happy for you guys!!!!

Haha lets just say that there aren't many people who start a phd at Iowa at an age most people are still in high school. 😛 so strategic googling.

And thanks on the congratulatory remarks! Where have you been for so long?!

Heehee I suppose so 🙂 Thank you 😳

1) The lab 😡 But I got some data I'd been waiting years for so that was really nice!
2) Coding a story I started writing this month on this app... such a great way to kill time and get my mind of this process... and the little fanclub I've accumulated doesn't hurt my confidence 😛 Getting down to the finale for season 1!

Nothing glamorous at all... just being my obsessive nerdy self 😉

I interviewed at the end of october... I literally have done nothing that I could update. I did take on a tutoring position in August but had to quit mid october because of interviews and class schedule conflicts. Maybe I will just wait until January. I get the "tell us you want to be here" vibe from some of these schools (especially this one) and I feel like I'm at a disadvantage by just waiting.

Are you going to the CCOM next year?

One of the attendings at work to me:

-There's no such thing as white privilege. I went to harvard. I worked at harvard all this time, gave all this money, and my son didn't get in ED. He's at XYZ prep school top of his class and he didn't get in. He got deferred and it's like a 3% acceptance rate for deferred legacies.
Well it could be worse. Atleast you're not asian.
-All the kids from his school that got in are asian and they're in the bottom half of the class. It's white unprivilege these days.
Maybe he'll go end up at that crummy school Yale.
-Yeah, now he has to scramble to do all his applications in the next two weeks. He really didn't want to write any more essays.

Maybe I'm not as bad at biting my tongue as I thought.

Haha that reminds me of how in Gilmore Girls, Paris is dead set on going to Harvard because she's like a quadruple legacy but gets rejected from Harvard and ends up going to Yale! :cigar:

In other news, I've recently started to freak out about studying for the MCAT (I know this is all old news for y'all LOL, but I'm planning to take it in January 2016). Bleh. Looking at TPR's Ultimate scheduled classes, it's like I almost forgot how much work I would need to put in to studying. :/

This is long overdue, but let's congratulate @Hermione L Knope MD. Ph.D on her recent acceptances!!!!
Cornell MSTP
Northwestern MSTP
Perhaps she'll take a break from her transfiguration practice to greet us 😉
OMG thank you so much Cyber 🙂 sorry I just saw this... I swear I must never look at my notifications lol. I'm terrible at SDN. But thank you so much! And congrats to so many others that have been great support such as @NoLimits you guys are all so beastly. I recently got accepted to Case MSTP too! The only decisions I've heard back about so I'm in for some tough decisions in the future

Are you going to the CCOM next year?

I love the CCOM, the people, the familiarity -- but I need a change of scenery, but it's got a very deep place in my heart. I could definitely see myself settling down here 🙂 But I can't wait to attend second look, it is going to be tough to say goodbye 🙁

@claduva94 as are you 😉 😛

Haha I'm glad you can tolerate my rambling 👍

I hardly tolerate it... I admire it! You have an enviable way with words and I like to think I do too but I just end up sounding clumsy 😛

OMG what a whiner 😡 Not to be personally offensive or anything to this person who probably has a lot more life experience than me, but talk about 1st world problems 😕
You had me LOL at the bolded part.

@Hermione L Knope MD. Ph.D I didn't know you changed your username! I've been following your success from Day 1, way back in June before I joined the forums -- I'm so happy for you and want to extend congratulations!!! You should be very proud!

It's like finding that picture of yourself from middle school that you thought you looked so nice in, and now you see it and you say "What was THAT?!?!" Superficial analogy, I know but it gets the point across 😉 LOL! 😀
OR (similar analogy) when you go to write your medical school application essays, and you get curious to see what you wrote four years ago for college admissions so you go back into the archives of history and dig up a few that you thought were really awesome at the time, read them with wide eyes, feel nauseous, wonder how the heck you ever got to college, and start panicking that four years from now you're gonna be saying the same things about your md application essays.

Yeah, I went back and read some of my 'awesome papers' from highschool when I was in college and from college post graduation after I had worked for a bit. That was fun...

Honestly, I feel that way reading some of my secondaries...

When I first started working on my PS, I thought it would be a great idea to pull up my old Common App essay and start from there, rather than scratch. Needless to say, one rereading cured me of that idea.

LOL!!! How true. And of course I totally get you, @ridethecliche. Reading my "best, most spectacular" paper on the ethics of stem cell research had my head spinning by the end of it! I guess that's why we go to school -- to learn, gain wisdom, grow and pick up on that wonderful thing called experience! 😆

I actually yelled at my boss today (I work at a law firm). He threw a tantrum earlier asking why I haven't updated him on certain tasks. Unfortunately, he managed to forget that I actually did give him a detailed update on everything (in addition to working consecutive weekends and volunteering to work during the holidays). I rarely raise my voice, but I'm really not a fan of unnecessary outbursts of anger (I don't think anyone is). Sorry, I just felt like venting.

Cyberdyne! You tell him. Sorry to hear you had a frustrating day. I guess this kind of thing is part of why you're here instead of studentlawyer.net.

Thanks! I've only been at my job for 6 months, but it has already confirmed quite a few lawyer stereotypes-lol.
Congrats again on your acceptances!!

I'm so sorry that you had this experience! I hate fighting and dysfunctional work relationships. I hope he starts to appreciate you soon -- you deserve nothing less than gratitude and respect!

Also, many many congrats to those getting into Vandy today!!!!!!! So exciting!!!!!! 🙂

@Cyberdyne 101 , how did your boss react?
He actually apologized afterwards-lol. I was initially scared because I was like "omg, I just let him have it, what's gonna happen to me?" Although, I'm beginning to realize that yelling and fits of anger are part of that culture (at least in some places). It doesn't mean I'm ok with it. That type of environment is definitely not for me. Not surprisingly, someone else at the office was glad I yelled back...

Obviously, I'm so happy everyone here is going into medicine! You all made the right choice!

Yea, I am so sorry to hear that... must have been 1) upsetting and then 2) scary. I hate drama but it sounds like it all worked out in the end. You work so hard and I am glad you verbalized that! Interesting about the stereotypes, I don't know many practicing lawyers... all my law friends are in school. Hope your day gets better 🙂

Thanks!! I'm grateful that you and others allow me to vent here!

I often joke that lawyers and gangsta rappers have much in common. They definitely use similar language

Stay out of OR's.

You'll have something thrown at you for shouting back and it'll probably be sharp and pointy.

I think @Cyberdyne 101 would be a fantastic surgeon and I'm proud of him for sticking up for himself against his jerk boss! Definitely want to avoid him getting hurt but I think he'll be just fine 🙂

I've been getting very distracted by SDN today, even reading threads for schools I didn't apply to. I did, however, discover a lovely post from @BengaliBrat and I would just like to share an excerpt with everyone.
Judging from what I have read on past years' threads, the Chosen get the Phone Call of Glory, while Those Cast Into the Outer Darkness are informed by email or portal change. Although I did not expect to be one of the Sixteen Elite, I confess to having secretly maintained a tiny flicker of hope--after all, even really intelligent and discerning adcoms can err. . .they might have mistaken me for someone else, or projected virtues onto me! Hello, BengaliBrat! There's a collect phone call from Reality!

Unsure where I said he wouldn't. Mostly he should stay out if he wants to yell back. I've never seen anyone do that to an attending and for good reason. There are better and more effective channels for that.

Lol, an OR and a law firm are in completely different dimensions.

Unsure what that means.

Are you saying you can hide in your firm but the OR's don't really lend themselves well to this!

Another whopping huge shout-out to @ProbablyAPenguin on Vandy (with a 75% scholarship I might add)! I know it's probably way too early in the game and I totally understand if you do not want to be public with such things, but which school(s) that you've interviewed at are you leaning towards? You're just going to be rolling in acceptances come April! 😀

@Cyberdyne 101 woah, I am so sorry you had to deal with that in the workplace. I'm glad all has settled down now, but that surely was not the most pleasant start to your week. 🙁 Workplace drama can have this insidious way of souring your whole week, even if you're mellowing out at home. Hope your boss takes this mishap to heart. If you could ever possibly draw a perk from this experience, it'll make an interesting topic for those "workplace conflict" secondary essays.

Awwww thanks so much! Haha I have way too many schools to hear back from before I make a decision either way. But I have some difficult decisions from schools with scholarships. That's for sure.

All jokes aside, @Cyberdyne 101 , I've found that surgeons have stronger personalities all around than that other specialties I've worked with. Some of them are by far the nicest people I've ever met and handle stress better than anyone else. Others are by far the nastiest people when they're stressed. It's amazing.

Also, I'm listening to a t-swift station on youtube while working and doing research. I HATE THIS THREAD FOR MAKING ME FALL FROM GRACE.

(But Ima shake it off).

Are you saying you can hide in your firm but the OR's don't really lend themselves well to this!
An OR and a law firm are apples and oranges in terms of culture. Doctors don't yell and curse at each other in front of patients, etc. You would totally get me if you spent a day or 2 at my job.

And yes, I hide whenever possible

I'd argue that good lawyers don't curse at each other in front of clients either.

Also, they curse at each other plenty of times in the OR. Technically, there's a patient in the room 😉

@breakintheroof, I got the flaming red cheeks. As the Chinese say (at least my friends, at least when they speak to me), "No, no. I am too much overpraised!!" (Thank you for spoiling me, though. Of course I got a secret thrill!):shy:
