What do you guys think? Does my choice in college/major have a huge impact on med school acceptance?

Hello! It depends on what you like doing! Bioengineering will be more math and application heavy; neuroscience and behavior will be more biology and psychology heavy; biochemistry will be more chemistry heavy (and possibly math — I'm not sure how far down the math sequence biochem majors go). For example, engineers will go down the entire math sequence of Calc 1-3, Linear Algebra, and DiffEq whereas this will probably not be a requirement for neuroscience and biochemistry (which at my university take Calc 1-2 for biology majors). Neuroscience and biochemistry majors will probably also have the option to take physics for the life sciences (instead of "regular" physics or physics for engineers). In neuroscience I think you often have the option to concentrate in either biology or psychology, which is super cool! I wish I had time to take more psych classes. I don't have much experience with biochem but I would imagine it's similar to the biology major but requires fewer upper class biology electives and more upper class chemistry electives, like physical chemistry.

I would honestly go to the college that is cheaper that you like the most! All of those universities are large and will most likely have research opportunities for you. I have a friend who goes to UIUC who loves it (although he's there for CS).

I have no doubt that medical school is going to be incredibly challenging, however you should take solace in the fact that those that selected you to be there have a combined century+ of experience selecting students.

If you don't trust yourself yet, trust them. You'll come around in time.

Go yanks. I'm gonna try to get in as many games with the bleacher creatures before I leave the city. Also pretty psyched that I got some free tickets to see the mets next week, first time to Citi field.

I legitimately feel like a different person today than I did a week ago in london/dublin when I was traveling with my friends. I honestly think that taking a break before going to school is incredibly important. Doesn't have to be a few months, but if you can take a trip with a few close friends to go to a music festival, or camping/hiking, or anything really you should do it.

Sometimes you honestly don't know how wiped out you are from the 'rat race' till you get a moment to breathe. I honestly believe that you're doing yourself a big disservice if you don't do something with the little time you have if you can swing it.
 
Would anyone care to read my less-than-page-length-"reason to take me off the waitlist"-letter to Emory? It's the essay you have to write in order to be put on the waitlist in the first place. I plan on shipping it tomorrow and I always appreciate more minds. If not, no worries!

Joke's on me cause I have no money to do anything this summer lol, spent it all on app fees.
 
Guys instead of paying $2199 for the online Princeton Review course, I paid $350 for the 2015 science workbook, compendium, science review questions and solutions, and a random assortment of Kaplan & PR question banks, AAMC full length exams (I'm assuming from the old MCAT), and MCAT Audio Osmosis. I really only wanted the science workbook and compendium but I'll take everything else! :biglove: I feel like I'm way too excited to start studying for this. I'll let you know how I feel when I actually start, haha. :hungover:
 
I've been alerted to the fact that Duke has outduked itself. According to the thread today, some applicants who were previously rejected have received an email informing them they are now on the waitlist. This email was accompanied by another email saying, in essence, "Really."

Those whose applications were not revived got an email informing them that they were still rejected.

Lmao guess they didn't anticipate so many of their accepted applicants choosing somewhere else, so they had a short waitlist to start with?

I didn't read most of the posts on that thread, but I think people need to pipe the F down, fo'real.

I read some of it....I stopped after a few because of the ridiculosity, and I don't think I wanna go back and read the rest.

I think they are within reasonable bounds to be voicing their opinions over what has happened today. It sucks for the people who were double-rejected to see the once-rejected people gain a spot on the waitlist. Just remember that we all have so much invested in this process.

Imagine if this happened at UNC. Imagine if you were one of the double-rejected and you saw other rejected applicants being placed on the waitlist.

You mean you get a glimpse of a convoluted story and before investing time to learn about all the facts, you come up with an non-evidence based judgement? And invalidate other people's emotional responses?

I'd think the same thing. "Oh, they must have mis-estimated something and ended up with not enough people for a comfortable waitlist." Also, I wouldn't get upset or emotional about it. They rejected me pretty early, so why would it matter again?

I got a glimpse because of initial curiosity. That curiosity was more than satisfied after reading the first few ridiculous posts. I'm sorry if my "pipe the F down" comment came across as "invalidation;" I was simply making a one-time comment...on the internet... Should I "invest time to learn about all the facts" for every single thing I read about on the internet before I make a simple opinion? That would be a huge waste of my time.
 
The worst part of all this is not about how the school deliver the result, it's not even the ridiculous mistakes they kept making, it's how lack of any acknowledgement of the admission office at Duke with regard to the confusing and suffering the students have to undergo. Not even a courtesy word saying "we apologize for the confusion" and not even a remotely plausible explanation as far as I can see.

Yes. You should invest time to learn about the facts if you want to give an opinion. If you don't bother to learn about the whole story, don't judge, don't try to tell people what to do.

Too bad that's neither how the internet works nor how the real world works. Do you know how many times I see and hear people give their honest opinions about whatever topic just based on their initial impression/first reaction on a daily basis? That's just life to me. I'm not gonna go around condemning people who give their opinions without knowing all the facts or taking the time to research them. Also, I wasn't trying to "tell people what to do." I said I think people should pipe the F down, not "pipe the F down, people."

You're right. A knee-jerk response shouldn't be held against someone, especially on the internet. However, you are aware of the amount of energy/emotions that one has to invest in this process. That's why people were bothered by your initial comment.

My bad. If you had asked me about this 8 months ago, I'd say it'd be more than okay to feel excessively neurotic and stressed and emotional about some weird admissions decision like this, even tho it doesn't help one bit. But now? I've grown quite numb from all the BS from this year. So now I don't really give a damn what some admissions office tells me or would tell me. "I got rejected again? Sucks. Guess I'll drink again tonight." "I got on the waitlist after being rejected? Cool beans, guess I have a shot, tho it's probably still low since they had to un-reject me first."

I am fully aware of the energy/emotions that people have invested. I've been an emotional train wreck, as we all can remember. But now? I just don't care anymore. The foolish idealism I had going in is gone now. There's no more need to get so worked up about one school's admissions office's decisions. Duke is not obligated to be perfect or polite. IMHO, they can do whatever they want because they are a top 10 school; they are not obligated to hold your hand every step of the way and treat each applicant like they are a special snowflake. Just like parents are not obligated to do jacksh** for their children (which we have all established, correct?), Duke is not obligated to be overly sensitive and bend over backwards for their applicants.

Sorry, y'all, but the real world sucks. We all have to live in it, so we might as well get used to it. @efle was not too far off with his comment.
