I have an interview with PCO December 5th! What made you choose to go to PCO?

@oklahomasooner I loved their eye clinic (and the fact that we get to hands-on experience early on), their faculty/students seemed friendly and helpful, and plus PCO is the closest optometry to me (only a 3-4 hour drive).

Date OptomCAS submitted: 8/11/2015

GPA: Main University: 3.93 Community College: 3.43

What made you choose PCO over all the other schools? I have an interview there December 5th so I'm just wondering what to expect!

I chose PCO because I absolutely loved their state of the art eye center, I love the fact that externships start your 3rd year, I like how you are able to specialize in areas such as Vision Therapy, Low Vision, etc. during your 4 years there. The students who toured me were extremely friendly and eager to answer any questions, and their clinical skills lab and library are currently undergoing million dollar renovations! I guess I just got good vibes there! Goodluck with your decision!

Hi guys, this is just information, and i think hope, for those who are planning on applying to Optometry schools w/o their bachelors degree. I was also worried about not getting in with my scores and gpa but I did. I believe that my personal statement, as well as my LOR's and Interview was what got me in, since my gpa and oat were not that high.

GPA (overall):
3.491
SCIENCE GPA: SHOULD BE SLIGHTLY HIGHER (i dont know it)
OAT: 310, 310
APPLIED: SUNNY, NOVA, PCO, SCO, ICO, NECO.
INTERVIEW EXTENDED: ALL OF THEM
INTERVIEW REJECTED: NECO, SUNNY, ICO
ACCEPTED: PCO, NOVA
PUT ON HOLD: SCO
I AM GOING TO NOVA

Like I said above, I dont believe my grades or OAT had a great impact in my acceptances. However, I took some of the recommended courses such as Biochem 1 and 2, Genetics, Medical terminology, Human anatomy and physiology 1 and 2, and Statistics. I had 2 months of shadowing (over 200 hrs) and 20 hours of community service. Did not have any research experience. I believe i did good on all 3 interviewes, they were pretty laid back and one to one.

I hope this gave you any hope and best of luck to all of you that are going through this stage

Even with the low scores on the OAT and the EXTREMELY low GPA I was really lucky. Just wanted to post and say that there is hope for everyone. Didn't think I would get one acceptance, but I'm waiting on a few places, after fall grades. It was amazing, I got calls from a ton of schools, kind of late in the game, but just wait it out everyone! Lucky to get the ones that I did in my case.

*edit: I have declined my seat at NOVA and accepted ICO!

@Phil81kessel
You could go for cost or convenience. NECO recently got rid of their first summer break, if I remember correctly, so that might factor into your decision. I've heard a few negative things about PCO but also that there's new leadership there working to fix it.

Date Verified: 2/4/2016
OAT Scores: 290 TS/310 AA
GPA: 3.16 cumulative; 2.98 science
Schools applied: SCO; ICO
Supplements extended: ICO 1/19
Interviews extended: SCO 1/21 (The interview extension appeared in my spam folder on this date, so I didn't see this until the 28th.)
Interview accepted: SCO 3/4
Acceptance/date: SCO 4/13
Major/Minor: Psychology; Writing
Extracurricular Activities: Ministry Team Leader of a bible study group; volunteered for Cadence with Care (part of Campus Y) during my sophomore year; volunteered for ECCOMA and Kids Vision for Life; worked as an optician for Lenscrafters since February 2015; usher and instructor at my church; shadowed 48 hours

So, since I applied later, I was actually placed on the wait list after my interview. This means I got a certain number on the alternate list, and when someone decided to drop SCO, I would have the chance to be reconsidered. In order to increase my chances, I shadowed some more (I was at 30 hours when I submitted my application).

At the end of the day, it is possible to get into optometry school, even if low scores, just as long as you are able to back it up with your activities. However, I would recommend not being like me and waiting until January to submit the application.

Could you please give me your stats for your pre reqs? I have a 2.9 gpa right now and I am contemplating whether to do a post bacc or a masters program before I apply to Optometry school. I'm scared I won't be accepted with my low gpa.

Date OptomCAS submitted: 1/7/2016 (I had to wait to get the funds for submitting my application.)

My pre-requisites GPA was 2.98 (I guess I put it as "science"). If you want to know if your GPA is competitive enough, though, I would ask the schools that you are thinking about applying to and see what they advised. I hope everything works out for you.

I'm going to Pacific!

If you don't mind me asking, what was your science or pre-requisite GPA? I am very similar to your situation but wanted to know if variance in GPA's would have a large effect as I am a student applying this summer.
