Class of 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Senior year is awesome! So little work! (Ok it varies but overall much more chill) No more extracurricular meetings! So much flexibility in exploring academic interests through senior thesis work! 😀

I'm glad you're doing so well, moop!

I'm a junior, so I have to get everything straightened out.

I'm already organizing my schedule next semester- it's crazy, isn't it?

To the person who said they're taking Analytical chemistry this semester... I feel your pain 👍 Hardest class I've ever taken and probably will take in undergrad.

Lecture is fine, but lab is the worst. 6 hours a week, meticulous boring work, and 40% of your grade hangs in the balance of your lab results. Forgive me, I know I sound like a neurotic pre-med, but I've aced the quizzes, the first exam, got 100% on the first lab, and pulled a C on the second lab and I'm sitting at a low A- overall right now. So frustrating.

Hey, an A's an A where I'm at (Round letter scoring ftw; only because I've yet to be screwed by it).

Analytic Chem's a bitch. My pre-pharm friend's taking Quant and looking at her lab books makes me want to cringe...

Which, was a weakness of mine. What do you all do for labs? Just reiterate everything in your book? I have the space now to take the pre-req's and other classes at my leisure, which is nice. So, if that's what it takes, I can choose to only take 2 lab classes at a time and plan accordingly.

In Physics, we have to write at least 7+ pages per lab... Not excited for that BS next year. 🙁

EDIT: Right, you all were talking about schedules.

Modern/Abstract Algebra, 3.
Linear Algebra, 3.
Advanced Statistical Methods, 3.
Research in Mathematics, 3. (The professor will be a LoR of mine for sure; but he's a math professor, which I think counts as a science letter.)
Programming I, 3.
Bioinformatics, 3. (This class is interesting but I'm taking it with a professor with a reputation for being a hard-ass. She's the only one that teaches it, though. C'est la vie.)

Midterm grades are slowly but surely coming in and I have three A's so far- Research, Programming, and Linear. Abstract's the hardest, easily, but Bioinformatics will probably be a good fight too.

Lab doesn't really follow what we're doing in lecture. With the lab we do A LOT of titrating to figure out the concentration of things. Everything has to be spot on though, balances read to the nearest .0001 grams, buret reading to the nearest 0.01 ml, etc. And you need to have a plan laid out before you go into lab, otherwise you spend too much time reading procedures and fall behind. The whole thing is just a huge pain in the arse. If you don't have to take it then do yourself a favor and avoid it haha.

I'll try making a game plan in advance. That's actually a really good idea. 🙂

I don't have to take Quant/A-Chem; but I do still have some pre-req's I need to do. Orgo I scared me and I swore up and down that I wasn't interested and nobody could make me.

And here I am, plotting my next semester of Orgo II and related insanity. ^^;

So, yeah. If anyone here has been putting math off, I can help you all there. But lab write-ups? You're cute. xD

If you have questions or whatever with organic I'm happy to help, I took Orgo I and II last semester, did well and tutor both classes now. I love conceptual chemistry, don't really care for the mathy stuff (like A-chem haha)

That's hilarious; I'm the inverse. I got AP credit for both semesters by smashing the test but Organic somehow mindscrewed me at every chance it got. That and being a freshman with shoddy study techniques didn't help with squat... Hindsight's 20/20. *ba dum tiss*

Have people started their research on schools yet? Any idea where you'll be applying? I know it's early but seeing the 2019 thread talking about the app cycle non-stop makes me really excited (weird) to get into the next cycle soon haha. (Does that make me a gunner? :scared:)

You're not alone! I can't wait to start applying... Can't really start a school list until I take the MCAT, but I definitely have a couple dream schools already.

I pretty much have my list. I'm hovering between 15-17 schools (MD/PhD) right now.

I'm not really sure how to make my list, to be honest, considering that my GPA is as mediocre as it is. I'll need to shoot for schools that will save me based on a test score since I test well.

My dad got a job in Florida, so I'm going to apply to all the schools there, and maybe Louisville (I have a good friend in Louisville and it's a great school. Go Cards!); but I'm open to suggestions.

I go to UG in NC, but the majority of the schools here are private or upper-tier or both.

Starting to look into schools more! Definitely the CA state schools since I'm a resident and would love to stay in-state. I'm a senior right now and decided to take a gap year because I felt totally unprepared to apply this cycle. Probably a good choice because now I'm pumped to apply next year. Seeing people from the year above me get into med school now is exciting but also makes me wish I was at that point already!

Yeah UNC ain't gonna cut you much slack in that respect..sorry to hear 🙁

And that, my dear, is why it's a good thing my dad's getting employment in a far more forgiving state. (Think about it; we got Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC for private allopathic, ECU only has around 60-80 seats, and CUSOM is brand new and also private; which kind of left me up a crap creek. But Florida's got a lot more options.) ^^;

I'd love to be able to stick near the friends I've made here, but I doubt I'll be able to. If things go well, I'll have around a 3.4-3.5 after this year and a badass MCAT score.

UNC is public, with a heavy in state bias. Around a 6:1 in-state to out-of-state ratio. Even Wake accepts around 50% NC residents. Also, even though ECU only has 80 seats, they all go to NC residents. So NC is not a bad state to be in, although also having a Florida tie should turn out to be fairly beneficial for you.

UNC and Duke gets a lot of attention for being upper-tier, and Wake Forest has a little of that issue as well. ECU would be a definite positive thing to have as an NC resident; but in FL you'd get 2 in-state DO schools (LECOM-B and Nova) and 7 allopathic schools.

Right now I have around a 3.3 cGPA, so I do have to pick my schools wisely. I don't know where the application money is coming from either, which is why I'm also looking for work. With that GPA, I'm better off with DO schools and if I can raise it enough, lower-tier MD ones.

Poor lad, he was a good one...

And my Packers slaughtered Cam Newton's Panthers today, so I'm fantastic 😀

OMG did you see that JAX beat the Browns? :O

I'm partial to the Dolphins myself, my mom roots for the Panthers. I'm glad my boys won this week too. 🙂

Glad to see JAX won! They're always so horrendous, I feel bad for them. Yea Miami beat Chicago! I'm totally cool with that. Miami's decent this year

I predicted the Ravens would take 2012, and they did.

Ever since I've had a feeling about Miami. And the Jaguars have a soft spot in my heart because they are such underdogs. ^^

Right, I was just telling you that UNC was public, not private. And while you'll sometimes hear UNC thrown around as a "top tier," it's definitely not top tier stats-wise. But yeah, FL is a great state to have residency, for the reasons you pointed out.

moop got banned?????!!!! 😱😕🙁
I know, right? I noticed it today. I wonder why?

Welcome back. 😀

dafuq didn't you delay until September??

Nah man. I pushed all the way back to January 13th. I definitely wasn't ready and at my best in August.

Mark my words, you will see me with a 33+ !!!

Oh. Here's the class thread I belong in. Hello.

Schedule for next semester is going to be fairly easy as I'll be MCAT cramming again. Physics elective + orgo 2 + 3 law courses. This semester was/is brutal (Orgo 1 w/ Lab, Immuno w/ Lab, Physio w/ Lab, Neurobio w/ Lab, Research, Volunteering, Work, and mock trial).

Lol I've never seen orgo 2 included in a "light" schedule. And I'm just curious... why are you taking the new MCAT?

I enjoy organic.

Taking the new MCAT as I wish to have a stronger grasp on the material. I don't wish to get a shoddy score this round, so I'll be preparing for the new one.

Orgo 2 is easier than 1, at least at my school. FWIW I'm taking genetics and two upper div psych courses plus research and a few other ECs while studying for the MCAT and it's tough lol.

Good luck with the new MCAT!

MOOOOOOOP

Whenever I read your name I think of this

Wait I didn't know that was a thing. Must find the episode now

One of my friends says "meep" a lot, so I mock her by saying "moop" and decided it's a great SDN handle!

Oh really??? The more you know...

Yea it's a south park episode! The guys start a band called Moop and go on strike because people are illegally downloading music. And Cartman forms a Christian rock band.

I literally just found this topic and this is where I belong! 🙂

How is everyone else preparing? Does anyone else plan on taking the new 2015 MCAT or sticking to the 2014?

@Thoroughbred_Med is prepping for the January one. I'm done. Not sure about others

New one. Don't have time to study with everything I'm doing at the moment. I figure the soc/psych aspect will help me.

New MCAT, taking 12 credits this spring semester to start studying, then planning on taking MCAT this August.
Holy shhhhh that's in like 10 months...

I'm going to be taking the new one in May...only a few days before my 21st.

I'm thinking psych and sociology will help but the bio is more biochemistry based and so I'm trying to fit that into my schedule for next semester...

I'm very nervous but my scores on the practice one were quite good so I don't think I'll do too bad. However, physics is more algebra based and I had calc based and so I need to learn how to solve things quicker and with different formulas from what it seems 🙁

If anything, Calculus based physics should be helping you. It's all application of mathematical principles.

Uh.....yeah that's not how physics works. Unless you blindly memorized equations (which is hard to do with calculus), the algebraic ones say the same thing and use the exact same intuition. e.g., instead of integrating, you'll just multiply.

I had calc based physics last year (not algebra based...we had to derive a lot and the like) and we had to memorize quite a bit of the equations and to do that I would go over practice problems using the equations. There's a reason people say calc based physics is really hard. I did not take the algebraic, I did not simply multiply to get an answer. I really need to figure that out for the MCAT though which shouldn't be too hard but I automatically go back to what I have learned

You will have 0 problems making the transition. Again, unless you memorized and only know how to rote regurge the equations, there are no functional differences between the algebraic or calculus-based forms. They even use the same variables, just for you.

The equations should be functionally the same. For example, when trying to figure out the amount of work needed to lift a 5 kg mass 5 m high, you would solve W = F * delta x. It's the same as integrating F * delta x from 0 m to 5 m, but since the force is assumed constant, you can straight multiply instead of having to integrate.
