Class question about worth

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is honors organic going to be worth the hit in my social life.

Honors courses are GPA killers. Most pre-meds avoid them like the plague.

In my experiences, I haven't found honors classes to be significantly harder than the regular classes, and most premeds, I know, willingly take them. Are you claiming the above from your undergrad experience or from reviewing transcripts or interviews or something else I haven't thought of? To to OP, I really don't think it will matter which you take, so I vote get a descent lab schedule.

Personal experience. Some honors classes are significantly harder than regular classes and the grade distribution wouldn't be any more generous. Some professors also have the view that it's not a real test unless someone cries.

But if it's difficult to attract students into the honors courses for the above reasons than the experience might be comparable to that of regular courses.

I don't see how they would know because I know my college did not have an honors orgo to offer. So I doubt anyone, unless they are familiar with your UG, would even know your school offered an honors orgo, and that you opted to not take it.

As for honors classes being harder than regular, it depends. My UG had an honors program where the liberal arts classes were honors, and it was a complete joke. I'm sure there are other programs where the honors program is a b*tch. I do think that honors classes tend to have better professors, though.

I had to take all honors classes because of the program I am in (it has many other benefits too...). I do not know what your class is like in your school, but I can tell you about mine... After most exams, people do not cry. You will have to work very hard, but you will also learn a lot. You would also need to be able to deal with academic stress well and be able to do your tests fast. The average usually needs to be low (usually around a C), so profs sometimes make one test that is really hard to reduce the average, so don't freak out if you get a low grade on one test/assignment. I worked hard and did well, and I also get a very "special" H.B.S. degree after my name.

I would not recommend that you take honors orgo unless you love orgo (honors orgo II made me hate orgo fyi), although it might be more interesting because you do a lot of long synthesis questions, so it's kind of like a puzzle; more theory too - not just rote memorization. Also, honors courses require more work, so it might feel weird to have to spend so much more time on one course and not the others if the other courses you're taking are regular.

Instead, if you want to do honors, I would recommend something like anatomy (because dissecting is fun 🙂), or physiology. And med school classes will be more like review (although obviously, you would still learn a lot...).

Also, think about:
-Will being really proficient in orgo help you later? It won't necessarily be useful in med school
-That lab time sucks unless you live on/near campus
-I don't necessarily think one course will be that impressive
-If the prof is not very good, this course might eat your soul (again, honors orgo II made me hate orgo, so I am biased)

The rule is to take the easier classes.

I don't think I could ever take a class from 6-10 on a Friday night and not end up hating life

I can ether A) get in honors organic with taking the lab friday from 6:00-9:50 PM or take regular organic with a decent lab time. What do you think?

freudian slip? he he.
