Hi there,

I’m a second semester vet student and was wondering how class rank is usually determined or calculated at different vet schools. I’ve been trying to figure out how students are sorted if they have identical GPAs based on letter grades to another student, but with different numeral grades. TIA!!!

Your best best is to just ask your school.

My school used actual course numerical grades to calculate the rank, not just the letter grades. Actually, at one point when I was a student, my GPA was actually very slightly higher than my friend’s but her class rank was like 15 spots higher than mine. It doesn’t make sense upon first glance, but I’d taken one more elective than her and gotten and A in that so I had more credits, but in most of the core classes I’d earned low Bs and she’d earned high Bs (at a school with no + or - system) which was enough to keep her higher than me.

I thought class rankings meant something. I just spent my first semester watching classmates cheat on every exam. I went to admin and asked if we could have proctors. They laughed me off like I was crazy. Some dumb student wrote a cheatsheet on a table during one of our finals and somehow a picture of this got to admin. Finally we had proctors for our last final of the semester lol class rankings don’t mean **** when students cheat and admin doesn’t care to stop the cheating.
This is super frustrating, and I bet a lot of us have felt similarly at some point throughout our schooling or even witnessed cheating that went unpunished. As much as it sucks, just try to focus on yourself and your learning. It takes up a lot of energy/mental bandwidth to try and get others caught. You've done your due diligence by reporting it and there's not much else you can do. The fact that they started using proctors means admin is watching. They need considerable proof to take action, and a verbal report/single picture/rumors are not enough. It feels bad when you think you might be at a disadvantage to those that are cheating, but you can't cheat on the NAVLE (without considerable risk and effort) and you can't cheat in practice.

I am not going to say much else beyond recommending caution with the accusations/content you post with a username that I am (maybe wrongly) assuming is your initials and last name.
