I'm posting here b/c I feel this forum obvy has the most experience when it comes to this subject and just how important it is.

How are rankings at most med schools established? do they include your step 1 scores factored in or just strictly grades? How critical are these rankings to residency app's at either a very competitive hospital or in a competitive speciality in general? Thanks for ur help.

We only have a rank "word" with no official rankings. With no preclinical grades, it's based loosely on clinical honors, step scores, EC activities/leadership positions, reserach (if any), etc. So it's based on subjective and objective criteria.

I'm not sure how much it matters because we had people with the lowest rank word get into specialties like ortho.

We battle it out in the Thunderdome. Then, they factor in the number of honors during preclin and clin years and some other stuff. The class is split into quartiles.

Class rankings are based just on grades.

Highly competitive residencies do care about your class ranking. They do want to know that you're in the top third, though most programs still probably consider anyone who's in the top two thirds who also has good boards.

However... I matched at a highly competitive pgrm in a moderately competitive field, and though I was asked about my class rank and the people at my residency expressed open disappointment about my crappy class rank (bottom half), they still sucked it up and ranked me highly enough to match me anyway.

You have to realize that, first and foremost, they are looking for a "good fit" to their program. If you are able to convince them that you are a perfect fit for the residency faculty's values and strengths, they will be willing to overlook many things, including your class rank.
