Hi yall. This might be a silly question but what are the average med. school class sizes? I know it varies from school to school... But I was talkin to a friend earlier and I mentioned that Wayne State's is something around 300 and that's huge. And then she goes that's not that big.. Harvard's is around 500.. (I'm thinkin wtf??) and that any school under 150 students is considered a "small school". Is this true? I thought avg. med school sizes were like 80-150 kids or somewhere in that range...

You're correct and your friend is mistaken.

Out of the 20 schools I applied to, only 2 of them had class sizes of under 100.

Texas A & M --> 98
Oklahoma State --> 88

Pretty sure Harvard's class is NOT 500. It would be a hell of a lot easier to get into if there were that many spots.

edit: it's 165.

From the 2007-2008 MSAR:
Wayne State = 260 matriculants for 2005-2006 season, estimated # new entrants=290

Harvard = 165 matriculants, estimated new = 165

Not sure what your friend was referring to. At first I thought maybe total # of students (all 4 years included as opposed to students/class) but that doesn't make sense either with those #s.

You think that's bad... my little sister (who's not interested in medical school) was under the impression that med schools were like undergrad, taking thousands of ppl each year.

:laugh: Bless her naive little soul. If only we were so lucky...

Harvard's ENTIRE med school class (4 classes) may be around 500, although I read somewhere that it was closer to 700. But each class is definitely around the 100-200 mark.

Wayne likes to say that it is "the largest single campus medical school in the nation".

Word is that there will be about 300 people in the first year class which starts this Aug. Figure that up until this year the average WSU class was around 260, so you have a total of around 1100 med students enrolled.

Lots of people do joint degrees or research years, putting them on the 5+ year plan. Thus they are technically still in med school but maybe not around campus and won't be graduating with you. As such, even if there was a constant 165 in each class year, there could probably certainly be 700 total med students yet to graduate at any one time.
