Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in the DO forum before. I'm 35 with two kids and hopeing to go to medical school. I have one more prereq -- Orgo to take (and maybe retake physics).

Anyway, I was talking to someone about how DO would fit in really well with my personal beliefs and philosophy and she warned me that the first two years in DO schools require far more class and lab time then MD schools. I think she said you are in class/lab from early morning until 5pm every day. Whereas MD school is just a few hours a day (first two years).

Is this true? I dont mind hard work, but this would make scheduling with my kids much more difficult. Any thoughts?

Yes, we're in classes longer, but it depends on the school.

1st semester schedule:
Monday: 3pm-5pm
Tuesday: 9am-5pm
Wednesday: 9am-3pm
Thursday: 9am-5pm
Friday: 9am-noon
(and lots of out-of-class dissection time)

Here's my current semester schedule:
Monday: 8am-3pm
Tuesday: 9am-2pm
Wednesday: 9am-5pm
Thursday: 9am-3pm
Friday: 9am-noon

Next year is a little bit longer.

oldladypremed,

I am only really familiar with the class schedule at TUCOM, but I wouldn't be surprised if most schools are set up in a similar way...

At Touro, classes usually start at 8 or 9am and end at 4 or 5pm (Mon-Thurs, Fridays you are done at noon!, go to http://209.209.34.25/webdocs/Preclinical/Spring03/oms1/2006springwks.htm#0414
to see Touro's class schedule) According to my sources, very few people go to all of the lectures because it leaves too little outside of class study time, but most everyone goes to lab all the time...

Hope this helps!
