Does anybody know if Midwestern CCP allows you to bypass a class that counts towards the PharmD degree if you've already taken it during your undergrad?

For example: If a student's taken Micro during their undergrad, will they have to retake it again once enrolled for a pharmD? Are there placement exams prior to enrollment?

Yes, they will let you opt out of some of the basic science classes. Usually you have to submit the syllabus from the equivalent course. Some classes require you take a "challenge exam" to pass out. Biochem and Physio have one (I have never know anyone to pass the biochem exam). Micro I don't think has an exam and they only let you out of the lab. The lab is easy and is just a grade boost anyway so it might not be an advantage to opt out of it. The challenge exams are the first week of school and they send you the information you need in order to opt out the summer before. Just make sure you save the course syllabus. I had a hard time tracking some of those down.

I asked about opting out of classes at the interview and was told that they had to be graduate level courses to do so. They did say anything about testing out for any of the courses. Maybe things have changed?

I guess i'm screwed since i've thrown out all of my syllabi.

They had to be upper level courses that you would take at a 4 yr university. I think 300 level or higher. Courses at a community college wouldn't work. I went through this process, but it was about 4 yrs ago. I am sure the policy hasn't changed much. I think it is on the MWU website.

would taking micro at a 4 year university and the lab at a community college work out?

what other classes can you be exempt from??? also will this allow you to graduate quicker say three years???

Nope. The classes are only offered once a year. You just have less classes than everyone else.

I dont know...that would be a question for the Dean's office once you get accepted.

Hey Karm, how did you like taking courses with students from other programs? (DO, PA) What are the text books like for CCP? I was looking on the online book store and it looked like most of the books for pharmacy school were mostly text and kinda lousy black and white drawings/diagrams. They were not like are nicely colored pictures and diagrams I was used to from undergrad bio/chem books. What was the biochem book you used? Do you think it would be useful to buy any books in advance to go over since I don't have any classes until I start at CCP in September? Or should I just take it easy until then? I am done asking questions 😀

We had some classes with the other programs...but they were mostly large lectures so there wasn't much interaction.

CCP doesn't use many textbooks. Most of them are optional and a waste of money. I would wait until they tell you what to buy because the books have been known to change from year to year. I would take the summer off before anyway. You'll be sick of studying once school starts. You'll end up taking 2 exams/week once the quarter gets going.

Hey! I am PS-I right now, I bought most of the books first quarter and used only the Biochem one. Honestly, if you have taken physio, biochem, immunology, micro before you should be fine using your old books to review. The notes for all the courses are very thorough and if you really want to read an exerpt from the assigned book you can check them out in the library for 2 hours. Like Karm said, relax over the summer and get rested for the fall!! Oh yeah, also, the bookstores website is not accurate at all. They don't have the books on their for the classes just more reference type books, fyi.

jlpolla, did you test out of any classes before enrolling into the program?

No. I had a year off since getting my B.S. so I figured I needed the review. Plus, our biochem class is completely different than the year I took in college (400 level). At MWU it is clinical based, you learn the basics; but pretty much relate everything to clinical situations and diseases. The biochem I took during my undergrad was more lab based. Like Karm said, no one really passes the challenge test for Biochem. I know a PS-II who passed out of the first semester of physio...

If you are looking for a good biochem book that covers EVERYTHING I would recommend Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry. It's written to be a review for the USMLE Step I exam, I personally found it very thorough and extremely useful.

That is actually the textbook we used this year for class!! 🙂 Hopefully they will keep the same for next years PS-Is.

Believe it or not, when I took Biochem there was no textbook designated for the class and the professors simply lectured on all topics. One of my classmates had purchased the book and recommended it to me, it's a real lifesaver!!!
