Hi, I'm new to SDN, and I was hoping I could get some advice. I'm a junior in high school with aspirations to be doctor, and I plan on double majoring in college. Because of this, I want to get as many gen eds out of the way now through AP or CLEP testing. My question is, would medical schools accept a CLEP or AP credit in, say, English Comp? English isn't my strength, so I want to take as little as possible during college, which is why I'd like to test out of one the classes.
So, would I have to take another English class anyway? Or can I take the CLEP/AP and then another English class to fulfill the requirements?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

Also, I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section.

As long as you get the college credit , whether it be from taking the class of an AP test the medical school will not care. Also, I think CLEP is only for foreign languages (I'm probably wrong), but CLEP only gives credit at certain schools.

I took a CLEP test before I started college. I did well enough to satisfy the requirements at my state undergrad for english 101 and 201. My advisor told me that medical schools like to see an actual writing class, so I took english 101 also. I think that you should probably call or browse the website of some of the med schools you might want to attend to see if they have a specific policy.

That said, I do not recommend taking CLEP (or even AP) to get out of classes. This is because ap or clep credits do not factor into your GPA, and the classes that you get ap or clep credits in are the ones are usually easy A's.

Thanks for the input!

I probably will take some sort of English class, but I don't want to take a year of it. It may be an easy A, but English is the one class that makes me miserable, so I'd rather take something else if possible.

Any more advice would be much appreciated! 🙂

4th year med student here. I took some AP classes and the Spanish CLEP exam which allowed to me to have several credits, thereby finishing undergrad early. The CLEP in Spanish was not at all a problem as far as med school admission is concerned and if I remember correctly, it allowed me to receive 10 or 12 credits towards foreign languages. I highly recommend the CLEP and AP classes to allow you finish early, as training keeps getting longer and longer (for residency).

Is it pass/fail or does the actual grade on a CLEP impact your GPA?

I am not sure how that factored into my GPA but as far as I know, I had to get above a certain score on the exam to be eligible to receive credits.
