Any help is greatly appreciated. My sitaution is this and not very unique. Ohio State vs. Buffalo.

Ohio State Positives:
-Im a big ten person, and love sports.
-Amazing campus.
-Great school.
-Love the environment and facilities.
-Loved the friendliness and how close it is to home for me. (Out of state though).

Buffalo Positives:
-Own chair.
-Cheap tuition.
-Great atmosphere as well.

Some glaring negatives of Buffalo is the clinical boards not being offered for the incoming class and the atmosphere (and snow). But those are that big of a deal I feel.

Does tOSU have instate tuition after 1 year?
Any other thoughts? I really need help.

Buffalo has a nice dental school. But I've seen the city and would honestly prefer not to live there, but hey, the education is good stuff.

i would go to osu but i want to go to a big school like a big ten school. to be an alum from a big ten school would follow you your whole life(thats a good thing).

hey ddsjunior...

i'm actually deciding between the same schools. i know that at osu you do get instate tuition after the first year. i calcuated how much more osu would be and it is about $46,000 total.

i LOVED both schools. and i'm having the hardest time deciding between the two!!

I guess what I am struggling with right now is that I know the negatives of Buffalo (for me the campus (not my cup of tea) and the boards may not be available at the school for our graduation year). So do you know any negatives about OSU that I should consider?

PS. Thanks for letting me know about the instate tuition, I would have hated choosing between schools because of money.

I think the boards situation might change for Buffalo, after all about half their students are from out of state. Alot from the west coast too. Alot of the guys already in dental school are saying cost and getting your own chair are the absolute most important things about a dental school. There are tons of threads on this.I dont know much about Ohio so I can't say anything about it, but UB is a wonderful school minus the weather and atmosphere. Good luck!

uhhh.. $46,000 is still a big difference IMO. Plus you're going to have to pay interest on that $46,000.

I'd go to Buffalo... cheaper. Plus, you can cross the river and go to Canada.

46,000 is big, but compared to other schools, that difference is minimal. Also, what benifit do I gain from having canada be right there?
Just being picky, I appreciate your help though.

Buffalo because it's also relatively easy to find very affordable housing around the neighorhood. Plus, you just can't beat getting your own chairs.

i called and talked to buffalo about the clinical exam and correct me if i'm wrong but this is how i'm taking it to be...

you still have to take the written portion part I & II of the NERB, but instead of the clincial licensing exam you do a 1 year residency program (because the state of new york is changing their policy). from what i understand, you can go somewhere else to take the clincial portion of the exam if you are planning on living in another state that is part of the NERB. i just don't know how much of an impact this has on students. is anyone fimilar with this?

another plus about buffalo for me is the eletronic curriculum. only have to carry your computer around!

I have to admit I found it kind of humorous that the first three points for Ohio State University are all generalities that have nothing specifically to do with your dental education. Not that these things are completely inconsequential, I come from a Big Ten school so I could not agree with you more about the attraction of attending a school that provides the quintessential 'college atmosphere'.

I think the best thing to do, if you can afford it is to visit each school again. I imagine such a trip would be well worth the expense and provide the sort of perspective that is not going to be found at SDN.

Im a big believer that your surroundings influence your success. A good environment is typically an indicator of success, and I felt that Ohio State is more of an environment for me.

I guess my biggest question is maybe what the negatives are against Ohio State, if there are any glaring negatives.

I learned some things from a fourth year dental student a couple of weeks ago about Ohio state that made me decide against going there although I was previously pretty sold on the school for many of the same reasons you are..
(note if you have already chosen to go to OSU stop reading now as every school obviously has their issues and this is just the opinion of one student-and we all know that we can have totally different perspectives about the same situations and also that even with the following problems there are a lot of really cool things about living in columbus, and that OSU seems to have a good reputation among dentists and everyone says that the football is the one of the best experiences that this world can provide.)

1.) "Faculty treat the students badly,..are demeaning, and treat you like little kids with things like assigned seating." This was big for me as he went off on this one for like 10 minutes--and said that he honestly felt like the faculty didn't care about their students whatsoever.--note:he was a good student but bitter about getting screwed over grade-wise in the clinic
2.)Archaic materials and equipment (obviously he knows about the room of CEREC machines) in the clinic which often make things awkward with patients and make it tough to keep patients and get referrals from them.(although he did say the requirements to graduate were easy and he was done way ahead of time)
3.) Clinical audits of patient charts that can make or break your gpa and are often based on patients that were recently given to you (essentially not your own patients)--seemed to be a lot of bitterness with this one
4.) They Force you (he seemed to imply without telling you) to take out additional private loans beyond what they explained (i.e about $4000 to pay for expenses associated with the Ohio Project (hotels, driving etc..))

Thats wierd about the faculty, Ive heard otherwise from other students and feel that they were very welcoming. Im sure, like every school, there are proffessors who feel its thier job to bring you down as much as possible. The facilities at Buffalo and OSU were the same in my opinion.

This is very good information and Im glad you bring it up. I would be more concerned if alot of students said this. One person will not change my mind about either school.

I hated buffalo's winter when I was there. But it's a great school, and it's stupid cheap.

Don't overlook the fact that you get your own chair. One of the most common complaints I heard from Tufts is chair time. That is one of the biggest reason they are expanding the number of chairs within the next 2 years.
