While a year is a bit long, definitely give yourself time. IMO writing is best done in spurts and over a long period of time so that you have the opportunity to return to the piece with a fresh eye multiple times. This also gives you the ability to write when you're "inspired" rather than forcing yourself to crap something out.

write how you would talk. If you constantly use fascinate, passion then use it. Trying to listen to every person on here will suck the 'you' out of your PS. It will be obvious that you are trying too hard
