i have the 3rd edition w/ cd-rom published in 2009. should i spend the extra $15 or so to get the 4th edition?

Have you learning nothing from college  The difference between the latest and last editions is always negligible, especially with your basic sciences.

There's actually a significant difference between the two. The 4th edition has been updated as per changes in the High School AP Biology curriculum for this year, which means it does not include some information that shows up on the DAT. Use the 3rd edition.

thank you all 🙂

I've been using the 4th edition for the last 2.5 weeks. I just finished Molecular Genetics (chapter 7 in 3rd edition and chapter 9 in the 4th edition). During my second reading of the chapter using Ferrali's notes, I noticed some major differences in both the chapter topics and details so I compared the 2 editions (I have the 4th in print and the 3rd as pdf).

One major difference between the 2 editions is the inclusion of Cell Communication (G-Protein, ligand-ion, and RTK pathways) as chapter 6 in the 4th edition, which isn't present in the 3rd edition.
To those who have taken the DAT, is this chapter crucial?

Another major difference between the 3rd and 4th edition was in the Molecular Genetics chapter. The 4th edition goes into waaaaaaaay more detail* than the 3rd. End all be all, it took me much longer than I had anticipated to finish this chapter.
*(e.g. experiments that lead to the discovery of the DNA molecule, pages of extra detail on gene regulation of prokaryotes vs eukaryotes, explanations of postranslational modifications, a subsection on just DNA cloning, etc)

Having read this thread, I feel like a dunce for not looking into which edition would be better when I began because I assumed newer is better.

I've heard that the DAT biology section is very random and broad, but does it focus enough on fine details to justify the use of the 4th edition? Should I switch to the 3rd edition?

I'm thinking the same thing themrn. It's going to throw my schedule off if I switch, but it also would be good review... How far along are you and what do you think?

I am using the 4th edition as well...but I really don't want to purchase another book (i.e. 3rd edition)..I am actually planning to just supplement that with KBB/Barrons AP Bio...is this enough?
