I'm a first year student at KCUMB, and I was wondering what clinical experiences other schools require/offer for first and second year students. We have a Score One for Health program where every few weeks we go to a local school and help with physicals, but no required clinical clerkships until third year.

I am under the impression most schools wait until third year for clinical rotations. My brother is dating a girl in the 6 year UMKC BA/MD program (she is a first year), and she has a "docent" program for a few hours one day a week which sounds like a combination of shadowing a physician and some hospital work.

Any statistics would be appreciated if anyone knows a good site.

At LECOM we have History/Physical class our first year, and CODA our second year. First year we learn to do a history and physical, as well as work on volunteer patients and the simulated patient. We then go out with a preceptor and work once a week with that doctor doing histories on patients, etc. During this time we learn to take BP test and other basic medical tests...

We have a once a week type thing at a doctors office here at NSU. It is largely dependent on what physician you are with for the quality of experience you get. I have lucked out and had great ones, my friends haven't been so lucky. By far it is a waste of time, time better spent relaxing or studying. There is plenty of time for clinical stuff 3rd and 4th year. Enjoy not having to deal with it.

AT KCUMB, we have score 1, in between my MS 1 and MS 2 year...I did a month at MCI with Dr. Johnston,Kirilla, Pinzur...just to get my feet wet. You could do Peds, Ortho...etc, whatever specialty you wanted to. I did a month to help give me an idea what to do 3rd or 4th year. It's an elective. It was pretty laid back, you can go to other parts of the country I think, but I was paying summer rent either way, so I stayed in KC then left for the month or so. You also have some early clinical experiences at Childrens's Mercy Hospital I did Peds Endocrine there... for a day. I participated in a lot of the school physicals at the different schools to get more practice.

At VCOM, some of the student organizations organize clinical experiences for their members. The Sports Med club does athletic standbys for highschool games (and, I believe, helps with sports physicals) with some of the Sports Med faculty. I believe the Peds club has done school physicals, UAAO regularly goes to a "local" pain clinic to practice manipulation, and the Virginia Rural Health Association does some medical mission work with RAM and helps staff the local free clinics.

Aside from those, we spend some of the Fridays in the spring of our second year in Early Clinical Experiences in various parts of healthcare (pharmacy, geriatrics, radiology, OB/Gyn, hospice, internal medicine, appalachian medical missions, and the free clinics). Some days are interesting, and others I would have preferred the day off to study or sleep.

Says it all...

We also have required rotation with preceptors in family practice all over the state during MS2, patients brought in for a variety of courses (neuro, neuromusculoskeletal, clinical skills, etc), but the majority is definitely during MS3-4. That's regardless of your school.

Feels weird to boast about my school, hope you guys don't mind...

Anyone know the same question for DMU students during 1st and 2nd year?
