I graduated almost a year ago and was planning on applying to med school this cycle. However, due to unforeseen circumstances I had to put retakinf my MCAT and applying to med school on the back burner to move away from my college town and help my family out with a family emergency (in short, my mom got cancer and I'm helping her w her treatment). Now that I'm home, I've been looking for various jobs to work while I'm helping her thru treatment. I have applied for both clinical/research jobs and retail and unfortunately have not been able to land anything clinical due to my limited weekday availability as I help my mom thru treatment. I am in the process of interviewing for a retail job of a brand I really like and would love to potentially grow in that area. However, I'm stuck because I don't know if med schools would appreciate me going from working in healthcare for three years (~3000 hours in various specialties). My thought process is that I could work at said retail job and potentially (??) grow in that area and have something unique to put on my applications while getting more clinical experience through volunteering/shadowing in my free time when my mom gets better but I'm not sure what med schools will think of the random switch. Any thoughts? I would consider getting a full time job once my mom gets better but I really need the money now and my current opportunity is something I’m not sure I’d want to quit in just a few months if there is potential for growth

Welcome to the forums.

Stop thinking about the admissions process. Settle yourself with taking care of your family, and do what you need to do. Sure, try for clinically related jobs and take on a little service orientation activities if you can, but put your priorities in the right place.

Retail has a lot of turnover, and you may get caught up either leaving or being forced to leave. How do you see yourself growing in this area?
