Hello,
I am asking for opinion to help me decide if I should go to my DMU interview. I am in a situation where it is not very easy for me to go to schools simply to "look" at a school for fun. I would only visit if I know I would want to go there. I have been accepted to NYIT-COM already.

The key things I am looking for in a school is strong clinical rotations. I am interested mostly in EM and subspecialties in IM (Rhem, ID, A&I). So the school with better match list into these areas would be great.

Some secondary points would be location: I would prefer to not be "in the city" due to pollution levels and demographics to be diverse. I don't care much for food- can live off pretty much bread and won't mind.

Thanks ^^

I don't know much about NYIT, but Des Moines definitely isn't a city. I'm from Chicago so I feel I have a pretty decent grasp of big city. Des Moines is just big enough to be interesting and fun and small enough for that small town friendliness.

As for clinical rotations, the more established schools tend to have better rotation sites because they have had much more experience building the relationships required with hospital systems to create quality rotations. That being said, there is no perfect DO school when it comes to rotations and your experiences will greatly dependent on your work ethic and drive to learn. You will have some great preceptors and some horrible ones. Majority of our rotations are in the Midwest which tends to be more DO friendly. I haven't heard the best things about the east coast and DO's but that's just opinion as well so take that with a grain of salt.

In my opinion, you would be missing out by skipping the DMU interview.

GO to your DMU interview!! You'd definitely be missing out if you don't. I went to several MD interviews and DO interviews and DMU was by far the standout to me. The doctor I work for went to DMU years ago and had great rotations. he even got to set up his own and live in CA for his 4th year.

totally agree. DMU was also the standout for me during this interview season! The fact that 4th year is so wide open for away rotations makes it even more appealing.

Both are solid schools. Can't go wrong with either

Are 4th year rotations set up where you can do you rotations back home if you wanted to?

Thanks for all your responses! I am currently scheduled to have the interview! Any more input is always welcome!

You basically set up your entire 4th year yourself. You can do the rotations wherever you want. The only stipulations are no more than 16 weeks of one specialty (which there are loopholes for), and then 4 weeks mandatory of family medicine and another 4 weeks of family, rural, or international.

Update: I just received my acceptance to DMU after attending their interview on 2/12. I am extremely grateful to be accepted. However, now I am literally torn 50/50 both ways. Both have certain areas that I value a lot (NYIT's nycomec residency and DMU community-style learning) and have areas I dislike equally (NYIT cost/commuter school and DMU distance away from family/not being affiliated with as many hospitals as NYIT).

Do you know which you're going to choose? I'm having the same dilemma!
