Hi,
I'm not a MSIII or IV student, but I figured that you all would be able to answer this question best. I'm going to PCOM next fall, and I was wondering at which hospitals the clinical rotations were located. If anyone can answer this...thanks!

Its on their website. Just keep in mind that b/c a location is listed does not mean you will get to go there. Some locations may only take one student and it is up to your collective group where each person goes. Sometimes it doesn't matter b/c many locations are equally crappy. The important thing to know is where the good spots are and keep it to yourself until after your spot is secured.

hey I really need some honest advice regarding the possibility of having to travel far from philly for 3rd year rotations. If anyone has any info, please post it or PM me. I have been looking into purchasing a home and making other major decisions which would be affected by that possibility (family, petx..) thanks.

There are plenty of home rotations but the possibility will exist that you will have to do a few away. The process of rotation selection is up to your group of ~22 people and if you are with nice people they may be willing to propose a reasonable compromise.

Fortunately PCOM has plenty of PA residents and some are willing to travel across the state to rotate closer to home.

In my case I wound up with only 2 away rotations for next year and I anticipate being happy with all of them. You could get screwed for the 3rd year but if your group implements a points-based system you may be able to use your points to ensure a better 4th year.

This is so interesting, how does the points-based system work? how are points assigned etc, thanks

It is up to your group how you will pick your rotation site. Your group may choose the point system, the "draw from a card", or something different.

The group point system

You list your choices by 2 grouping - which rotation you really want and where you want to do it (think in excel format with rows and columns). If you don't get your first choice but your second choice instead, you get some points. If you don't get your first or second choice but your third, you get more points. If there is a conflict (let's say there are 2 people who wants to rotate through XYZ hospital for ABC rotation which only has 1 spot), then the person with the most points win (since theoretically that person has been screwed more than the other person). That person (who won) then loses all his/her points while the person who lost that challenge gain more points (since he/she didn't get that rotation). Those points can be used later on when there is another conflict with another student(QRS hospital for EFG rotation)

Sounds complicated but it really isn't once you sit down and think about it.

But it's really up to your group how you guys pick sites. It's possible your group can decide to arm-wrestle if there is a conflict, or pick straws, or use the Harry Potter magic hat. The point-system is just something most groups decide to use since it seems fair and one person doesn't get screwed completely.

Don't worry too much about it until your 2nd year 🙂
