Clinical volunteering?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can just volunteering in the community and shadowing dentists be sufficient?
I didn’t have any clinical volunteering but a lot of community volunteering (2 year lds mission) and I got 5 acceptances.

Yea its definitely not essential, BUT if you are a below average gpa applicant (like my self, 3.2) then clinical volunteer can REALLY help you out. I did a dental trip to Honduras and had a lot more success this cycle this cycle than I thought I would. Every school I interviewed at, asked me about that trip

Some schools (but not all) put a lot of emphasis on volunteer experience. I know that Tufts for example really stresses that they like applicants with many volunteer hours / experiences.

I volunteered a lot for the community, but only have 20 hours of clinical volunteering under my belt. I got accepted to my top choice that happens to be my state school.

No, clinical volunteering is not important. Those two are sufficient.
