I plan on submitting my amcas early june. However, I haven't had much clinical experience yet.

I have loaded my summer with many hours of clinical work/ shadowing.

Is this acceptable? Will they look at the work done during summer of apps?
Also will this look bad?

Personally, I would submit it 1 week after you begin your clinical experience. That way, you can click "June 2009 to PRESENT" on your work/activities. By the time interview season comes around, you'll be golden.

Alternatively, you can send in update letters, but I don't know how many adcoms/possible interviewers actually read those.

I did exactly that. I spent my summer taking a few classes, doing research, and doing clinical volunteering (I didn't have too much clinical experience before that). I listed everything on AMCAS and the schools definitely noticed it. It helped to keep doing it in the fall to show continued commitment. That being said, it's probably not as good an idea as taking time to get a track record of clinical experience before applying.
