Good evening! I have posted on here before and received some very good advice. I am currently in an unusual situation and am wondering which path I should take in regards to being competitive for medical school.

I have 8 years of clinical experience as a speech pathologist in medical settings. I recently took a part time job in an LTACH with a vent/trach floor. I am wondering if I should apply to a research position or find another clinical SLP position to be more competitive for medical schools. With 8 years of clinical experience, does it even matter what I do at this point? Would it be more effective to use some of my time to volunteer, as I have 0 volunteer hours? I am worried it will look a little questionable to start racking up volunteer hours right before applying to med school. I figure this is a chance to make myself a little more competitive but I am not sure if a research job will help me as much as it might help a premed undergrad. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, volunteering absolutely matters, even if you do work full time and have kids. If you're applying this June, yes, it looks bad if you start right now and currently have zero hours. You're right, as a non-trad your lack of research is not that important unless you're gunning for research heavyweights.
