I am wondering if having family in other states will help on OOS schools. I am an AL resident, but my father's family lives in Philadelphia and surrounding areas and my mom's family lives all over FL. Will having immediate family members in other other states help with admissions to schools in those states? Thanks.

How can adcoms verify that? You just tell them or what?
I'm just asking out of curiosity.

I have heard that some schools ask on secondaries if you have any ties to where the school is located. I didn't know if anyone had been asked about this in interviews or if it had helped anyone get admission.

You let them know about as many random friends/family members you have in the state as you can.

Heh, true. At the very worst, it doesn't do anything. At best, maybe you get a little help, but I kind of doubt it.

Looking at the FAFSA, (for example) it's pretty clear about "the parent who gives you the most support", that you live with the most, et. al. As I recall, when I filled out my forms to prove my Wisconsin residency, the language was pretty similar. Things like the state of your driver's license or where you pay taxes are probably going to be more interesting to the folks that process this kind of information, rather than the addresses of family members that you see sometimes.

State schools generally ask you about ties to their state. I am a legal resident of one state, call it ZZ, but I lived in XX for ten years and my parents recently moved to YY.

Having and explaining on secondaries my 'ties' to these states definitely worked in my favor for both XX state school and YY state school who historically accept very few OOSers.

To answer the question: in my experience, having immediate family in (or a background with) a certain state can get you looked at if you are not a resident of a state school that favors IS applicants.
