what does "night float" call mean? Is it easier than traditional in house call?
Thanks!
Night float IS in house call.
Night float was designed as an overnight shift, starting late in the day/evening, to cover the services as an alternative to the "traditional" 36+ hour call days. Many programs added a night float when residency work hour restrictions came on board.
Typically a night float resident will be on call every night for 4-5 days in a row, for a certain period of time (ie, 1 - 2 months at a time). The details of the shift length, number of patients covered, and length of doing night float will vary from program to program.
Whether its easier depends on you. You are still in house, you tend to cover more patients than you would have covering just your service, and if a surgical resident, you often miss cases done during the day. Not to mention the difficulty in getting used to working at night and sleeping during the day.
