Hey all, so where do we undergo CME training/courses for our license? I have to renew mine this upcoming January and not sure where to go. Does any course suffice? I see a bunch of courses online, but are they legit/honored by the boards ? The license I'm trying to renew is a FL license btw.

If you are a resident, residency itself counts as CME toward maintaining a license. You shouldn't have to do CME in addition to residency/fellowship.

I've graduated, have been practicing a few months but will enter fellowship next year. I have to renew my license in a few months. I guess I'm not sure if I have to do CME then?

If you're by a local med school, they generally have a ton of CME opportunities (Grand Rounds being the most commonly available to people not directly affiliated). You could go to whatever the major conference for your specialty is, that often accounts for a lot. Not sure what specialty you are, but often board review/prep accounts for some CME.

It depends on your license cycle.

Per the Florida BOM website: "First Biennium Renewal: If you are renewing your license for the first time you are exempt from the general CME requirement and are only required to complete 2 hours of Preventing Medical Errors and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS. Rule 64B8-13.005, Florida Administrative Code, requires the Prevention of Medical Errors course contain the five most mis-diagnosed medical conditions in Florida for the previous two years. Currently those conditions are: cancer related issues; neurological/spine related issues; cardiac/stroke related issues; infectious/communicable diseases; pulmonary related issues."

So if this is your first renewal ever (sounds like it is since you have questions), you only need the things listed above.

I don't have a FL license, so I'd suggest asking one of your younger colleagues about their licensing experience as well.

BTW, it's very easy to get CMEs online, via society membership or through journal subscriptions. As has been said, local academic centers generally offer CME courses as well.

I would be the "young" colleague in this case 🙂 But thank you, I think you are absolutely right and I just saw what you posted. I didn't read through the whole thing as I should have ! Thanks!

In any case, if you're attending grand rounds / M&M / any local conference, make sure you sign up to start claiming credits. You'll need them somewhere along the line. (Although if you're starting fellowship, that will "count" for all of your needed credits).
