I've tried to figure this out from the ABEM website and colleagues, and am getting conflicting answers:

1. How much CME do we need to maintain state licensure (WA) and ABEM certification?
2. When does this need to be submitted, and how?
3. If ABEM certified this year, do I need any CME this year?

Thanks!

Generally most states require a certain number of CME per year or every other year. You should look on the medical board's website for your state.

ABEM requires 25 hours per year (on average). If you were certified in 2012, then your 25 hours starts in 2013. You may do zero hours in 2013 and 50 in 2014 and you're still compliant with regards to ABEM. The hours you use for other uses (i.e., satisfying state medical board CME requirements) can be "double-dipped" and used for ABEM requirements. Eight of the hours must be self-assessment (i.e., you've taken a test on the content and not just sat in a lecture). This information can be found in your personal page of ABEM's website (under the MOC area).
