CNUCOM vs KCUCOM?

CNUCOM

Pros...
MD Program
Match list is decent

Cons..
Accreditation still pending
No federal loans. private loan interest rates seems lower than federal interest rate although do not have Income Driven Repayment or Loan Forgiveness. Both accrue interest while in school and both offer deferment while in residency.

KCUCOM

Pros..
One of the top DO schools
federal loans

Cons..
Maybe a problem getting into competitive specialties
Taking COMLEX and USMLE. I am not a great test taker

I have some friends that go to CNUCOM that love it there and they say the school if very confident about getting full accreditation. The only private loans is a very difficult pill to swallow though. If you are going to do CNU I would strong recommend looking into HPSP.

What schools did they pick CNUCOM over? Also, do they think getting into competitive residencies is an issue with the school reputation? I am trying to see if the hassle is even worth it.

CNUCOM matches very well every year. I also have friends there and, while it may not be ideal, they make the most of it. The reality is that going to a CA MD program is gonna set you up better than any DO program could IMO. I personally would choose CNU over Kansas.

The private loans thing is a bitch tho

My friends love it at CNU. There is the match list for CNU for 2025. It looks really good. Again having to take out private loans is probably the biggest con

Thank you! If they get accredited in June are they planning to offer federal loans from next year? I did not see any info on this but asking if you have heard from your friends there.

yes, private loans is the biggest drawback! Based on what factors you think it’s worth it over KCUCOM?

I think you are better off asking cnu about whether they plan on ever offering federal loans. Again I would really consider HPSP if you go to CNU

idk, its a personal decision to make. if you are sure you want to do peds you can definitely get into a good peds program from KCUCOM. if youre deadset on Harvard CNU may make it easier. I think in general with the drawbacks of DO (less competitive rep + double exams etc), plus being far away from home in kansas, i would choose CNUCOM. but i dont think theres necessarily a wrong answer here, its just what you choose to prioritize.

I’d be wary of using anecdotal evidence when it comes to making a decision on schools. Yes, people might say good things about CNU, but it’s likely because the positives are more memorable when the school doesn’t have a good reputation. As someone from CA, I’ve known far too many people go to very established DO programs over CNU simply because the opportunities and connections conferred at more established institutions speak more than a degree one obtains.
