MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

do you guys/gals think when you interview matters? Like Oct vs. Jan? Since its all ranked I wasn't sure

I have heard it could potentially make a difference in terms of how much energy and practice you have. They recommend not scheduling interviews you care about/your top preference programs last because you may feel more fatigued/burnout by the end and not necessarily in the beginning because you may want to practice interviewing with programs you’re not crazy about

From the program's end? Not necessarily. From your end - maybe! If you have a bunch and are fatigued at the end or if you get better as time goes on, etc. I tried to schedule interviews that mattered to me towards the middle/end so that I would have some practice under my belt!

wait someone I know just sent me a raunchy pic requesting that I join her onlyfans account. wut is dis? I am old

Where is the link to this magical spreadsheet that everyone at my school is having a conniption about.

Anyone realize they miss secondary response when they submit their eras? Feel like med school app all over again...‍♀️

Found this on Reddit:

Hey guys, don’t panic too hard right now.

1. ERAS has embargoed exporting applications (I.e in csv format) until 11p tonight. If a program uses thalamus or another external invitation service, they might be waiting to export that file to use it build their invite templates in those external services.
2. We did see a drastic uptick in applications from US graduates. My coordinator thinks perhaps as many as 200% more than last year (pre-covid we didn’t really count these numbers much as they were fairly static).
3. We have a ton of applications. My program has a ~110:1 applicant to position ratio and a ~10:1 applicant to interview slot ratio.
4. Some of us actually want to do a good job reviewing applications. Some candidates (local, etc) are obvious picks for an interview but we have a HUGE swath of GOOD applicants that we need time to sort through.
5. We don’t have massive swarms of faculty reviewing applications at warp speed (you don’t want this, either). It’s often a small number of faculty (consistency of review) with overlap on each candidate (reduce bias/error).
6. We are rechecking applications we previously sorted out to ensure we weren’t being too harsh - this takes time.
7. With the ratios as above we will have to reject perfectly good applications. Try not to take it personally.
8. We still have day jobs, these got dropped on a Wednesday morning.

Hold tight.

Source: me, reviewing applications.

EDIT: 200% from 300% because math is hard in the evening.

Soap is going to be wild this year with surprising results if the above number of applications rings true. Many applicants who applied to many more programs will get more interviews compared and may end up matching while being ranked to match by 10 programs. Where as other mid competitiveness or high competitiveness low application number applicants may go unmatched and un-interviewd.

This year regional/personal ties, any sort of personalization showing interest, and interviews are gonna be sooo important. Sure the rest of the app will be as important as always but those factors will be huge because they’re more likely to rank and attend

Pds are going to rank everyone that inerviews.
People who get the most inerviews are going to be the people who applied to the most programs.
Lots of unfilled positions even in competitive specialties.

I'm kicking myself for not applying to way more programs, honestly. I have mixed emotions about interview hoarders. They earned those interviews but also, during a normal year we had people going on huge amounts of interviews even as mid tier MD students. It makes no sense. Why hold those interviews?

Interview hoarders don't deserve a pass this year. Top applicants going on 25 interviews at places they know they don't want to go to is just selfish.

Careful man, you keep making this much sense and someone is going to tell you to stop speculating about a process you know nothing about

Reading this thread makes me want to panic apply to more programs. But I really struggled to put some of the programs on there that I did. I feel like it’s futile at this point.

I want to panic apply to 200 FM programs. (I don’t even know if there are that many). I’m suffering right now. This thread is actually helping me cope. To be with other people who understand.

There are 638 FM programs.

But for real you'll be fine, just breathe it out

So if you dont match prelim, do you just soap prelim? Or if a juicy categorical comes up can you snag that? Asking for a friend that may have applied to too little ty's.

If you match your advanced program, but not your TY, pretty sure you can’t go to a categorical. Have to soap prelim.

Stay strong with me bro. I already have like 40 programs on there that I really only have on there because I would rather have a job than nothing. I'm not adding more! This process is dumb as ****.

Everyone chill it’s been like 30 hours. Don’t panic add programs. PDs will not rank everyone that interviews. They still want people who actually fit the program. Maybe the whiskey is helping to chill me out from before but everything is gonna be okay

There is literally no reason a PD would not rank a person they interviewed unless that person did something so bad that forced the PD to say they would not want them training near them.
Obviously they will rank the people that "fit" higher, but other people they interviewed would just be ranked lower, otherwise the interview was a complete waste.

So for those thinking about adding other programs, I did this last year, and I did it like...a day or two after apps opened. Yield of 0. And then I felt like I couldn’t even send them “pls interview me I LOVE you” emails because if that were true, they would have been in my first wave of apps submitted before deadline. I don’t know if anyone who added extras late and succeeded but I’m sure it has happened.

If it were me this year, I would focus on what I had and probably send letters of interest earlier than typical - one to two weeks after apps are out. I had very good luck with LOIs last season and I think it got my app reviewed at places it would otherwise not have been, particularly because I was trying to break out of the region I had lived in for my entire life. So many programs are asking for secondaries, give them what they want without them having to ask.

I mean I've talked to a couple programs. May be specialty specific but they still want to find people that fit. They PDs want to screen out more than screen in. They are basing it on who will actually come to their program. If you have an app that screams "I applied to every program" it won't hold as much weight as "I took the time to actually apply to the program". Again, may be specialty and program specific but I think itll hold more weight. They dont wanna go through more than they have to

Did prelim and TY programs have to be the first day too? I thought we had some time before submitting them. Can I still add these programs?

The number of applicants don’t really change though. So programs either adapt by offering more interviews and filling deeper on their rank list, or they risk going unfilled as well since even the most qualified “hoarders” can each only match at one place.

But ranking only occurs once they have interviewed a candiate.... so everything you are saying might be true, however people who applied to more programs will receive a greater number of interviews compared to an applicant with similar stats.

Currently PDs are saying they recieved 200% more applications from AMG applicants. Will they offer 200% more interviews? Who knows. I doubt it considering they are talking about 6 hour virtual interview days.
There is a liklihood that a lot of programs may not be able to fill because they didnt interview enough, which will make soap wild.

I received an interview invitation message but I cannot see it in my interview invitations in ERAS... I replied to the program through the ERAS inbox to ask what's going but I'm not sure what to do

Please help
