MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Does anyone applying to EM this year know if my friend only has 2 SLOEs, but no other letters, will programs look at his app or consider it incomplete? He’s scrambling to try to get another letter right now

That's what I thought but I know multiple IMGs who have gotten more invites that I at primary care programs. I am now wondering if it is LOR thing, etc.
In all seriousness, people are saying just wait a few weeks because then you get more interviews as what happened last year. The thing with last year is that the MSPEs were sent out after the application went out. This year it all went out at the same time. Everyone I know has at least one invite.

You think these programs have been able to do a thorough review in the 6 days after the cycle opened? The invites sent out by now are the first wave based on regional ties and program specific filters. Give it at least a couple of weeks to gauge for a serious problem.

If it's going to make you feel better send out some LOIs. Don't get your hopes up about it and know it may annoy some PDs at this stage.

For people couples matching, when do you plan to reach out to places your SO gets an interview at?

Today feels drier than yesterday. Should have applied to more programs.
It seems like it has been slow in the mornings so far before picking up in the early afternoon. PDs probably getting off rounds and giving the okay for invites lmao.

But they aren't the ones with regional ties that I am seeing. I guess I can send out a LOI but will wait a few more days.

I’m re-reading the 2019-2020 panic thread because there isn’t enough panic material here lol. Plus I try to click on the people who were panicking to see how it turned out.

That's a whole new level of neuroticism. I like it.

I applied very broadly and got a few safety interviews coming up, but I potentially have 2 that are going to be top 5(maybe even #1?) for me. Should I schedule these 2-3 weeks from now or ya'll think it's ok to schedule these later in Dec or later to get more zoom interview practice under my belt?

To be quite frank, at this point it’s (probably) mainly board scores besides the regional preference. This depends on how your application stacks up against the rest of the competition. Unless you have really great stats, I wouldn’t freak out yet.

I still think it’s too early for a LOI as well. I will most likely start sending these after a couple of weeks (as long as the program has started sending out invites already).

I am applying to the least competitive specialty and have included "safety" programs as defined by having had people SOAP last year/I meet the board score criteria. Nothing.

Depends on how you feel. I would probably try for December so you’d have at least a few under your belt before your most important ones. But if you feel ready in 2-3 weeks, that’s cool too

You are giving the worst advice on here, and I can't help but counter it.

I sent an LOI on DAY NUMBER ONE and got an interview due to it. I also have VERY LOW stats and no regional ties yet have >10 interviews. If there is a program out there that people want, I highly encourage sending an LOI because it may be too late if you wait much longer.

So you’re not the first pick of the litter. I guarantee there’s other people in the same boat as you right now. It’s okay to be anxious but I’m trying to give you some logic to help you through it. Good luck

Maybe it’s different for FM but for other specialties, less than 1/2 have started even sending out interviews. Do whatever floats your boat

How do you know you got the interview because of the LOI

Who did you send the LOI to? PD or PC?

Anybody have any ideas for a quiet places to do an interview? I won't have a secure quiet place until next week.

My apartment has dogs, one of which barks at everything. I tried contacting my school, local libraries, and my apartment complex. My school doesn't look like it will have a room ready by the time I need it and the libraries have all private rooms closed to public. I could just do it at my apartment and hope the dogs aren't intolerably loud but there's no way to ensure that.

Do you have any friends or family that could watch your dog for a short period?

Your school library doesn’t have study rooms you can reserve?

Maybe a friend you can either have take the dogs for a walk or over to their house, or a friend whose place you can use?

The libraries have rooms but because of COVID they aren't allowing anybody to use them in my area unfortunately.

I might have to find a place for the dogs, ya. I just wasn't sure if there were other options I hadn't thought of before starting to ask around for someone to watch them for a bit.

I can’t believe I have ZERO invites still. Never thought having gotten this far that I was completely unworthy of actually being a physician.
I hear you. I'm not sure what is going on TBH. What specialty are you applying?

these are your dogs? You can always try Rover and hire a sitter for the day

There is an ice cream and coffee place near me that has a business room that anyone can use. It’s in the back and is pretty quiet. Maybe a place around you has something like that.

IM. Applied to 108 programs. All Florida programs, and then mostly SEC territory (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Carolinas, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri), and a couple in Nevada and Arizona.

DO student. 223 Step 1. I didn’t take Step 2 CK (yet?) and my Level 2 CE score isn’t released for 6-7 days. So possibly that? Even though program websites say you only need them for rank, if everyone else has theirs then I’m less complete than them.

You're going to get more than you can go on. I suspect they are doing this in like 5-6 waves.

So. When do programs usually fill up all their interview slots? When you talk about 2nd and 3rd waves, when does that usually happen post-application submission?

Are the Reddit spreadsheets gone?

jk I’m dumb

I just got my first invite!!! Thank you universe!!! Instate, applied for audition and didn’t get one.

I know which place haha.

I got the email from that place, went to myeras/interview tab and noticed my #1 choice instate by far sent me a message on myeras, BUT DIDN'T EMAIL. I now have only a late January date. Not bragging, just letting ya'll know the no email thing is real! I'm so happy!
