MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back from IM programs? I am a DO student. I have good scores but still have yet to hear back.

Thank you!
Take a look at the IM spreadsheet interviews offered tab. Good way to see if your app might have been passed on in the first or second wave of invites or if the program simply hasn’t extended any invites this season. Also good way to freak yourself out by comparing yourself to others. Enter at your own risk:

Can confirm places that sent out fat waves earlier are still trickling stuff out/sending more waves. Just got UCSD while at the gym and had to speed home because my phone wouldn't load anything after they sent out a massive wave earlier this week.

What are your stats by chance?

261/270/AOA. I've got a couple pubs and some posters but nothing impressive research wise other than just being involved in different projects for quite a few years. ECs are average, couple leadership spots nothing amazing like class president or national thing. Low tier school in the midwest.

Those step scores tho...

How important do y’all think attendance at zoom Q&A sessions are? Legit the only thing im getting in my eras messages and i just dont have time for any of them with auditions going on

How mandatory are the pre-interview zoom dinners?

I’d say it’s mandatory tbh. It’s also the only time to interact with residents for more than a formal 10-20 minute interview. I was on one last evening and even with it’s awkward moments it was still very useful and will plan on doing them for every interview that offers them

Question for DR homies: if you get an II and it says you are also interviewing for the IM prelim but you haven’t applied for that IM prelim.... do I have to send an app for the IM prelim or will I be able to rank it without sending in an app? Tryina save money if I can.

You have to send an app in even if it's a formality.

Is it too late to apply to a bunch of prelim IM and TY? Don’t want to get stuck with prelim gen surg but also don’t want to waste money

Got my first surgery II today; in-state program very close to home.

Also got an information email from another program saying that they will release the first batch of interviews well into November.

Someone told me their school was suggesting a big Thalamus invite surge this weekend with ERAS down. Anyone think there’s truth to this or should we expect a quiet weekend?

I for one, am not expecting it.

That said, I will still keep my phone on me when I'm away from my computer, and I'll keep my laptop on me when I'm watching football.

Man i hope not. But anything is possible.

I got an interview invite at 830 PM last night while at dinner. I thought these invites were going to go out during business hours.

Idk if this is new but ERAS now says it will be open tomorrow at 8am OR EARLIER so they must have gotten complaints.
That is new. And I definitely saw programs complaining on Twitter to ERAS. Originally it was set to reopen 6am Monday, then a couple days ago they said “targeting midday Sunday”, and now “8am or earlier Sunday” is brand new message today.

I for one was glad for the weekend off from anxiety, and that they wouldn’t be able to review anyone’s app to get an invite or me to get rejected before my level 2 release Monday. So these are sad updates for me.

Are we sure it'll be released Monday? I think the website says November 2-3. I'm waiting for mine as well and hoping my level 2 somehow gets me out of this dry spell.

I already have my step 2 score so unless I failed Level 2 (I don't see how that's possible), I don't think step 2 will change much about my app.....but I'm still anxious to see what I got. I think we're going to see a lot of II invites come out next week folks.

So I honored my EM shelf, should I update programs on that? I was unsure cause to me, it felt like I would be "bragging" lol which is definitely what I don't want to come across as (and I'm not a bragger either tbh)

I wouldn’t even consider it if you’re not applying EM. If you are, than maybe??? But hopefully someone else responds in that case.

You might want to ask GamerEMdoc in the EM APD ask me anything thread about that to see what he thinks. It might be better to just sprinkle your grade into the conversation during the interviews rather than send an email just to say you honored the clerkship.

EM applicant here my vote is definitely not.
Crap...I misread what he posted as honored the rotation. If it's just an honored shelf then absolutely don't email the program. If you get an invite, they already think you have the intellectual chops to handle residency. At this point they want to get to know you and figure out if they'll get along with you for 3-4 years. Emailing them to brag about acing a shelf exam will make him look like a gunner. Nobody likes gunners.

Thanks for the responses yall! I am applying EM, and my school (DO) states that honoring a shelf exam means you honor the rotation, and it was listed as a 4th year core rotation.

Radio silence today for everyone or just me?
Me too. I honestly bet as soon as ERAS reopens it’ll start up again. Probably a lot easier to send messages through ERAS and even just to get everyone’s email I’m sure there’s a shortcut for programs to use thalamus, etc right from ERAS

Are you getting a SLOE from this rotation? If you are then the fact that you honored the shelf should be mentioned in your SLOE I believe.

Also what’s the score cutoff for honoring a shelf? I’m applying EM as well and got my shelf score back a few weeks ago and based off the standard deviation I’m pretty sure I did well but I’ve never taken one before, just COMATs.

It was the EM COMAT. >112 = honoring since shelf exam = 100% clerkship grade (besides finishing aquifer cases, but thats based on completion)

I already got a non-res SLOE the week prior since I wanted to have my 2nd SLOE in before Oct 21st, so the shelf grade wasn't mentioned in the SLOE :/

gotchu I thought you were talking about the NBME shelf not the COMAT. I wouldn’t update them, especially MD residencies since they’ll know what to do with a COMAT score even less than COMLEX lol.

I don't know how NRMP would know you've interviewed at the Preliminary program if you haven't applied and are not able to rank the program. Double check with the advanced DR program but err on the side of caution.
