MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Well, I've been on 3 interviews so far (all at small community FM places) and each one stated they will interview the same number as any other year - typically 100. I also heard the same number of interviews will be conducted from my home PD. This makes me think your program is the outlier and that most programs don't want to deal with ranking twice as many students as previous years.

Regardless, it's clear that each program will handle this differently and I would suggest most students add 2-3 interviews to whatever they considered their "safe" number was pre-COVID
Yeah i was a bit surprised the number of IVs was increased. The increase in applications was what stuck out to me.

Take a look at the IM spreadsheet interviews offered tab. Good way to see if your app might have been passed on in the first or second wave of invites or if the program simply hasn’t extended any invites this season. Also good way to freak yourself out by comparing yourself to others. Enter at your own risk:

Oh nice! Thanks for sharing the spreadsheet! ALready tripping out soooo....haha

Question, I scheduled interviews for two separate days in the week. However, they are both having the resident social night at the same time and day. Does it look bad to not go to one of them?

Could you dip out of one early due to *insert important made up event here* and arrive at one late due to *insert important made up event here* ?

Not too surprising. I figured the smaller programs would be hurt the worst by this as people try to get a ton of safeties regardless of how competitive they are. From what I've heard from academic places from our PD, it doesn't seem like they are increasing interview slots much if any.

My core program is very excited about the number of applicants this year - talked about it in didactics on Thursday. They have an EM program with three spots and an IM program with three spots. They didn't split it up, but stated 1680 applicants across both currently. They didn't mention increasing interviews. They do interview all auditioning students, and they pull from their rotating students most years. Idk how lucky the rest of the 1680 people are going to get. I think they're pretty smart about who's actually going to be willing to go there.

I applied there, so tell them to be excited about me specifically lol. But they have 6 IM spots.

I don't think the surgery places are inviting more than usual. One of them said in the invite email they were doing 80 interviews for 5 spots and another said 72 for 4. Both of those numbers are what I would expect in a normal cycle.

I don’t think many are. There’s realistically only so many people that fit the “mold” of the program anyway, and more apps really shouldn’t increase that by too much.

Regional ties, direct connections, and stats are gonna rule this year. You likely need 2/3 to get to top spots, and at minimum 1/3 at most everything else (depending on specialty)

hey @Dr. Lion, for Casper Duet, did it show a checkmark to indicate you were done? I had done Duet days ago. Just did Snapshot and it gave me a checkmark. Which made me second-guess why Duet didn't have one.

If you got an email from Casper a few days ago (about completing everything on time), they mention that it’s a glitch and just to make sure you did it and all should be good!

Same here! People keep saying the interview spots are filled but don't realize that programs allot spots and send interviews out based on batch numbers as they read lol

Can't speak for surgery, but can't I assume a place is filled if I can't waitlist or schedule on eras?

For any IM applicants who received interviews at top programs last week (i.e. WashU/UPMC/Duke/UMich/Stanford/UCLA/UChicago), when did you submit your apps on ERAS? Wondering if these are just being sent out in batches and/or programs haven't reviewed all apps yet...

I submitted my app 10/20 at 3:30 PM EST and got two of the ones you listed. My partner who's also going into IM (with objectively better stats than me, step 1/2 both 10+ points higher) who submitted at the exact same time only got one. Not sure how they're going through them, definitely seems kind of random. We're also in-region for two other programs that didn't send us an II.

Didn't get an invite from these places so these are just observations from the spreadsheet but it seems like WashU did most of their IIs in two waves, UPMC finished in one large wave, Duke and UMich are trickling them out similar to Mayo rochester, Stanford sent their IIs out in one wave, UCLA is doing it in batches from what others have posted, and UChicago I'm not sure.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your approximate stats (e.g. 25x, 26x)? I feel like this info isn't shared super widely so it's hard to gauge how you measure up compared to the other applicants.

Yeah no problem, I'm 24x/25x, partner is 25x/26x, both in 2nd quartile at upper-mid ranked med school (won't share specific tier b/c anonymity), hope that helps

Got my first rejection today. Was a big name program, and def a reach, but it still stung a bit, lol.

Would honestly prefer this to ghosting tho!

Update: got one II later today to balance out the previous bad news, so it's not all bad.

Yes so helpful! Thank you 🙂

Well I got my Level 2 score and sent it to programs an hour and 16 mins ago. Can I have my interview invites now?!

Got mine this AM too. I asked one of the EM APDs who has an AMA thread on here if I should notify the programs my score came in and he said not to bother, that it goes automatically and the programs will know as soon as they open my app. But I'm applying EM...so YMMV

Have an interview on Wednesday...they haven't even sent me the time or platform! This cycle is stressful enough!
Yep same with my one on Friday. The original message says they will email the week before but still nothing...

Yeah I saw your question. Even though I’m not EM, that aPD is very helpful. I also asked ERAS about if the programs would get an alert/symbol/blinking light/notification/highlight/whatever when we re-submit transcripts and they said no, it will just be there when they open up our files.

I so far only told my core site which is where I’m at right now on an audition, and a place I was supposed to audition (but got cancelled in summer due to Covid) that said they would put me in the “make sure to review” pile but then followed up to ask me about it after apps were released.

But make sure you re-transmit your scores. That part isn’t automatic. It took like 8 secs for them to resend, but you have to initiate it. Then you can check the transmission report to verify that the programs have Level 2 listed.
