MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied with step 1/level 1 and have been getting plenty of invites. My level 2 was a drop from level 1 (same with step 2).

When should I release this score (if at all)? Don’t want it to hurt my chances at getting interviews/ranked but I understand programs want to see a pass before ROL deadline.

But make sure you re-transmit your scores. That part isn’t automatic. It took like 8 secs for them to resend, but you have to initiate it. Then you can check the transmission report to verify that the programs have Level 2 listed.

Thanks for telling me. I didn't realize you can/should do that. I just resent the COMLEX scores.....very quick and easy.

Have an interview on Wednesday...they haven't even sent me the time or platform! This cycle is stressful enough!
Yeah I have an interview tomorrow that starts 6 am my time (8 am eastern) and they just emailed me an hour ago with the zoom link. Was about to call them and be like ummm how am I supposed to interview?

Got my first rejection today. Was a big name program, and def a reach, but it still stung a bit, lol.

Would honestly prefer this to ghosting tho!

Yeah, agreed. I have three official rejections. Kinda surprised, not at the rejections themselves as those were three mega reach programs for me, but more so that I'm actually getting the rejection notification. I definitely expected them to trash our app and never reach out again.

Same. How about that 69k intern salary though... I think it's the highest I have seen. (EM at least)

I'm not sure where that is but it's Kaiser so it has to be CA and admittedly, I didn't apply anywhere on the west coast, but I bet that COL is quite high

Yup...California. Modesto is in the Central Valley...about halfway between SF and Yosemite and 75 minutes south of Sacramento. COL is higher than Texas and Kentucky....but it's actually one of the cheapest areas to live in California....much cheaper than the coast and definitely cheaper than SoCal. I worked in Modesto (different hospital) as an EM PA prior to going back to med school so I know what to expect.

yeah definitely release it before ROL, but if your application is strong enough without it that you’re getting enough interviews now, then maybe wait a while? Like December?

For Ca it's actually quite low. It is in Modesto so not a very nice place to live. Granted you still have CA taxes and California just changed its licensing laws making it so residents can't moonlight unless it's in house.

The blood is starting to flow. Just got b2b IIs in the span of 2 minutes. PDs just opened their gamer stations for the night.
I hope so! I’m ready for it! I just got let out early for the day from my rotation, my level 2 is in and at my target, please send me some more invites besides my core site!!!!!

I'm feelin' EMpty ;(
Our school just emailed us that Broward Health North has a new EM residency if you’re interested.

I have a PA license in CA. I can moonlight as a PA

Ya i got nothing today so feeling pretty depressed and concerned that there is something wrong with my application after watching everyone get like 2-3 invites.

I’m still concerned because my 1st and only invite today is from my core rotation site. They already wanted me. I still have zero proof that my application is viable.

I submitted my app 10/20 at 3:30 PM EST and got two of the ones you listed. My partner who's also going into IM (with objectively better stats than me, step 1/2 both 10+ points higher) who submitted at the exact same time only got one. Not sure how they're going through them, definitely seems kind of random. We're also in-region for two other programs that didn't send us an II.

How are you and your partner planning to handle one person getting an invite and another one not - just wait for a bit before sending out some sort of interest or send out now? like "hey program X, my partner got an invite...so..."? in a similar situation. =/

Send it immediately. Couples matching is a different ballgame.

Hey guys just got an invite for an open house but not an interview. Was wondering what it meant? Is it sent to all applicants or is it showing interest?

Seems like a lot of programs are sending those out. Particularly for GS. Not sure what it means other than letting applicants show their face and learn more about the program

Kind of doubt they’re sending out 1,300 invites for their open house though. Must mean we made it past some kind of initial filter.

The advice we got from our home program's PD was to wait at least a week (he said two but I think that's a little long personally). I think it's also kind of a case by case thing, one of the programs that sent me an II last week is trickling out their interviews per the spreadsheet, so I'm keeping an eye on the open spots, and my partner will send out an LOI early next week or when ~25% of spots are remaining, whichever comes sooner. I think a lot of programs are reviewing slowly, so it's definitely possible they haven't gotten to one person's app before sending out the other's invite.

Edited to add: it also depends on where you are in the cycle. At this point, we're definitely more inclined to send out LOIs just to reach a number of interviews that we're comfortable with, but if it's later on and we each already have 12 (fingers crossed lol) and a program we're less excited about sends one of us an invite, the one who got it might just cancel rather than try to solicit a second one.
