MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Are people interview hoarding due to the extra round being added to SOAP? I think people want to hold onto more because they predict this app cycle is not going to follow the trends of previous years. I am personally self capping at 15-17 but I can easily see neurotic applicants doing >20.

Yeah I mean 15 interviews where you actually want to go and rank them all should be more than plenty. That would be my cap too (if I was lucky enough to reach it!).

I think this was talked about at some point but, how do you respectfully tell a program you can't attend the pre-interview thing?

I have one day double-booked and because of that I can't go to the pre-interview thing. I don't wanna be like "yo, I'll be talking with another program, sorry fam"

You could honestly just say it directly "I won't be able to make it due to prior obligations." I don't think you need to go beyond that, these things are optional after all and we all have lives.

I think people are more likely to interview hoard this year in particular because of the ease of interviewing and virtual nature. If an applicant's 15th interview is middle of no where community program in past years they would have to spend 500 or more on travel expenses. No way are they attending this interview. This year it's just an afternoon commitment on zoom.

Cool. I think I'll go with that. Thanks!

Nervous because I have an interview scheduled during a second look week at a place I super want to go... should I just keep pushing to move the interview? Reason to worry it’ll look bad when I have to duck out one morning of that week?

Got my first rejection. Went to log it in the spreadsheet and see I'm one of many who got the email.

will say that I think some applicants are soaking up a lot of interviews....I'm at >20 interviews myself with 26x/27x. Have turned down ones I don't care about as much. rads applicant.
I've also gotten a comfortable number of DR now but TY programs have been kicking my butt. Seriously misunderestimated how competitive TYs in the middle of nowhere midwest are.

Ayyy first rejection gang. I do appreciate it as well.

Welp this week is starting out rather rough. Was hoping there would be a second wave but all I've got is a rejection today. Got passed over by my top 3 in the first wave of interviews even though I am geographically close and felt I was at least moderately competitive there.

So, I didn’t even realize I had a pre interview meeting yesterday for one program. And it’s one of my top spots. Does this look bad for not attending?

I missed one too. I got timezoned. Either just say you had technical difficulties but it didn’t even come up because those are optional.
I feel like this year even more than last year is useless because it’s hard to make an impression when you’re a box on a screen when they’ll see 500+ applicants this year

I just saw over on Reddit someone discouraging having a drink during the ‘Social Hour’. I have one tonight, and had heard from classmates that most people have a glass of wine or something (obviously doesn’t have to be alcohol, but many have had alcoholic drinks).

Can anyone who has attended social hours speak to this? I was planning on having a glass
of wine but don’t want to be inappropriate!

Messed up pretty bad and left the subject line empty in a letter of interest to a coordinator at a home program that maybe my #1. I know the person well and wouldn't think they would hold it against me, but I guess we'll see since they haven't sent out invites yet. Another prior to that had a typo in so I might as well withdraw from there. A long shot anyway. Two prior to that were too long and sent a follow-up email with another LOR from a notable connection, only to read later that multiple emails, more than 4 LOR, and being too long, will probably reflect negatively on you. Polished up my LOI template, reduced it to 5 sentences, and had a school advisor sign off on it. The few that I sent after are as good as they get but pretty frustrated that I may have very well lost myself some really good opportunities. Unlike me to make such mistakes.

Anyway, take your time and have others read your LOIs first before you send them to prevent these avoidable mistakes.

Why would you send an LOI to a program that hasn’t even sent out interviews yet? The whole goal of them is to give them a reason to look at your name and potentially application again after you know for certain they’ve sent some interviews and passed you over. Like they say, right now your application IS your LOI.

My first pre-interview social they encouraged alcoholic drinks / beverage of choice when it started. Most of the residents were at the hospital but I had a glass of wine at mine. No issues whatsoever (I think 😆).

I've drank a beer at all 3 and the residents have drank and encouraged doing what you want during all 3. Just don't make a fool of yourself during the pre-interview meetings. That's all that matters.

Why would anyone care if you had a glass of wine if you weren’t acting inappropriately?

This is a great reminder that every time we meet weirdo residents/fellows/attendings that they were once weirdo med students. Don't listen to these people and just be sane and normal. As if having a beer as a 26 year old (or whatever) during what is traditionally a glorified cocktail hour is risque. Lol just lol at that redditor.

Has been chill for me too usually everyone is sippin'.

10/10 do not recommend getting hammered tho.

You’re fine. Be normal. Be yourself. Have a drink or dont, no one cares. Just don’t be wasted and doing keg stands

Didn't know at the time. Found out later. But ya definitely should've found out first. This is a person that knows me pretty well so I was also just saying hello while mentioning how much I love the program and I appreciate the opportunity to be considered. I really dont think that she would hold it against me. Very nice person. But we'll see I guess. Nothing I can do about it now but get through these 5 stages of grief.

You’ll be just fine.

Does anyone know how UVM's cyber attack is affecting their season?

What do you mean by cyber attack?? Did they tell applicants about that?
their systems have been down since 10/25 (including email) due to a cyber attack. it's been in the news nationally.

Listen if this is a person that knows you well and is on good terms, I think a very simple mistake like that will be "forgiven," don't worry, you're human and so are they.

I honestly don't think there is that much strategy involved here. Both of my advisors have just said "send an LOI to a couple programs if you'd like, it can only help" without regarding whether or not they have sent interviews etc. Especially as some programs just send one big batch and are done with it.

Wow did not know about that, I can only imagine it has led to immensely difficulty post 10/25. Thanks for that information

How are your feelings toward new programs? or one with only 1 senior class?

I applied to 4 or 5 new programs. I also applied to well established programs, historical DO, historical MD, programs with healthy mixes, county, community, and university programs and a couple of Hail Mary programs just to keep it interesting.

The positive thing about some of the new programs I applied to are that they are nearly all completely unopposed residencies. Also I think your feedback, being in the first class, will be taken more seriously than a place that's firmly established.

Bad day today. Lots of invites went out to friends, I only got rejections. Wife had multiple crying fits from dealing with my kids being tough and me being sick with worry. Things looking bleak in this house.

How many apps have you sent out....and how realistic were you about which programs you applied to? It's not too late to send out more apps to rural, middle America programs.....just for safe measure.

122 apps, sitting on 4 interviews, all courtesy invites from auditions. I applied gen surge cause it’s what I always wanted, but knowing my scores are low and a prelim may be in the works. Starting to think a prelim isn’t worth it cause there’s no time to make big changes. I don’t have letters for FM/IM cause I didn’t want to tap out prematurely... here I am now wishing I could. I saw some friends with way lower scores than mine get invites today and now I’m thinking there’s something else about me that’s a liability. Like my age, or that I have kids, or maybe my personal statement sucks. I don’t know, it’s a mess. We’re just in the trenches I guess, but my wife is kind of my rock and her losing her mind right now is like SUPER worrisome. Never seen her like this.

Hang in there. On the EM threads, one of the PDs is saying it's still too early for LOIs to go out. Do you have a faculty advisor you can speak with.....perhaps go over your app an give an impartial opinion?

Also, I'm willing to bet I'm older than you are...so I hope age isn't being counted against us. I've got 2 kids myself....one is on the other coast in college, one here in 8th grade taking all his classes online. Go talk to your wife and see what she needs. Maybe she needs the night off from dealing with the kiddos, dishes, laundry, etc.

has anyone had an interview where you scheduled it on thalamus and you also join the Zoom link from thalamus? for the other programs i've interviewed at, they have sent the Zoom link in a separate email. but I have one tomorrow where I think I join directly from thalamus?

All this talk about alcohol vs not... I was drink a coke in a glass with ice. Now I’m wondering if anyone assumed it was a mixed drink, even though it wasn’t and I don’t even drink.
I leave whiskey hidden, and it’s been mentioned and residents have been drinking so I drink. It’s been well received but I pick and choose when I bring it out.
We’re all 21 and normally these have alcohol associated with them so just don’t chug 5 beers or down a gallon of whiskey and you should be just fine

Glad this was mentioned. Would have felt left out since I don't drink. ill have to get some nonalcoholic wine/beer so that I'm not that guy with the ice water.

Why does it matter? Personally I don’t think I’d want to be at a place that would rank me lower because I don’t drink.

That's tough man, but I am also applying GS and I know for a fact that lots of programs haven't even started sending II's yet.

I’ve received rejections from Yale New Haven & Mayo Rochester, and my S/O suggested I send them something along these lines, thoughts?

So my II tomorrow afternoon is through Thalamus. I just got done reading all the instructions, downloaded Chrome to my laptop and logged in to check it out. Seems pretty straightforward......but I wanted to ask if anyone had any issues with their interview using Thalamus.
