Hey guys! I was just wondering how often all of you pre-meds (and medical students/residents/attendings that read this thread) drink coffee. For a while, I've been on a cup a day, but I'm trying to cut back before medical school starts (where I know I will be drinking quite a lot 🙄).

So: How much coffee do you drink?

Maybe 2 cups a month? Mostly just the sugar filled drinks at Starbucks that don't actually taste like coffee.

I had to say every few days. I'm too lazy to brew my own coffee (I hate that measuring thing..seriously a cup of coffee is not 6oz to me...too much math first thing in the morning). However, when I was working, I had a cup every morning. And when I get my Keurig, it'll go back to one per day or maybe 2 per day.

Then, I will be running in circles. Oh so sensitive to caffeine!

I live in the desert so iced coffee erreday in my bubu cup (34oz)

28 transactions on my credit card in 1 month from buying coffee refills at 7-11 while studying for MCAT this past summer. Sadly I haven't been able to quit the habit, I drink it every morning now.

What do people find so appealing about coffee? The caffein helps keep you awake, sure. But other than that, is there anything really appealing about it? I mean...it tastes horrible but...different strokes I guess.

I drink it for the taste, not so much the caffeine. I'm in the process of switching to decaf/cutting down though...Still, Eight O'Clock Hazelnut coffee with milk/sugar and bacon, eggs, and cheese on a croissant = breakfast of champions.

I've been explicitly "saving" caffeine for studying before exams / third year. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I can get up at about 7:00 without it, but any earlier is really pushing it...

I prefer tea to coffee though, anyway, it tastes less disgusting.

Why stop?

Right now I am getting up at 5:00am and three days a week not getting finished with work/class until 10:00 so not home and in bed until 10:30. That gives me 6.5 hours of sleep most nights. Not good for the next morning. Coffee gets the pep going. Me without coffee in the morning is a sad sight.

I love it, just don't drink it that often. I can usually get enough sleep to not need it

What? You are insane. Coffee tastes like the nectar of the gods.

I like the taste but I also work nights, outside for much of it. Iowa winters are cold I never fully got switched over too nights.

About a cup every few days, when I don't get a great night sleep. And instead of a cup, it is in the form of a pill.

I use to HATE the taste of coffee, but as the years have gone by and I began to have to drink it more regularly the taste is now okay to me... I still don't drink coffee often, maybe a few times a month.

Nothing better than a hot-but-not-too-hot cappuccino on a cold Saturday morning in winter, or an elegant cafe macchiato (espresso w/ dollop of milk froth, not the Starbucks bastardization) to cap off a meal.

Also, as a matter of personal taste, I consider sugar/sweetener added to coffee to be an outright abomination (unless it's a mocha, but again, nothing added beyond the chocolate syrup). Also too: whole milk, always. 🙂🙂

I candy mine up unrecognizable from what it was fresh brewed. U mad bro? 😛

Nah, like I said, it's personal taste. 🙂

That said, I do get just a tinge of annoyance at comments like these:

I can jump on that bandwagon and cosign fo sho

One pink packet and two tablespoons hazelnut creamer for me (candy in a cup).

No coffee for me. Used to down Monster and 5 hour energy all the time, but the caffeine withdrawal was too much. Now I'm caff-free, but I drink tea once in a while.

When snarf hits the fan, I go back to Monster though. :scared:
Yes, I do get palpitations 🙁

Just like whiskey, if you can't sip it without adding anything then you need to start drinking better quality.

Don't like the taste; can't handle the effect.
If anything, I'll have tea or just a sugary Vanilla Bean Frap from Starbucks (non-caf) OR an apple, there's an idea 😛

coffee? maybe 1-3 cups per week
sugar-free energy drinks? 1 (sometimes 2) per day

Straight caffeine doesn't do as much for me as an energy drink with the wonderful additions of taurine, ginseng, guarana, & b-vitamins... plus it has 2-3x the caffeine 😎

Just like whiskey, if you can't sip it without adding anything then you need to slam it.

Nothing better at the break of dawn that watching the sun rise walking to class as you sip your cup of coffee. Just thinking of it makes me want to get more coffee.

The gentleman above was correct. Tis the nectar of the gods.

Must drink 2+ cups of black coffee and diet coke daily to avoid those caffeine withdrawal headaches in the afternoon 👍 #noregrets

Agreed. Now I want coffee too.

I love the taste of coffee. I can drink it black, but I prefer 2 creams and 2 sugars on a 12 oz.

I like the taste of black coffee. If there is a Starbucks with a Clover press around you, give it a shot. Decent tasting for Starbucks.

I average probably 1-2 caffeinated drinks per day. Currently crashing from a Rockstar I had to help me get through the Packer game.

I drink about 1-2 cups of chai every day (paki tea)

Coffee and tea are both good and good for you (though you have to avoid the sugar and milk for second part).

I can survive without it most days, but it's just such a calm, relaxing (and then stimulating) thing to do every morning and afternoon and sometimes at night when I have to really push hard.

Starbucks tastes like crap! Dunkin' Donuts coffee or Einstein Bros. coffee FTW!

I have no tolerance for caffeine. If I drink one cup of coffee, I will stay up until 6am the next morning and then conk out.

So I don't drink coffee.

In undergrad, I once drank a pot and a half of coffee black, and two warm Pepsis, and stayed up for forty-eight hours or so doing work.

Now I throw up a little in the back of my throat at the taste of coffee, and can only manage to keep it down if it's sugared and creamed into unrecognizability. Since I try to stay away from calorie-bearing beverages, that makes it a rare occasion.

The caffeine pills, on the other hand? Every morning.

Eff that, 2-3 coffees will give me a headache and kill by vibe. 😎
