Coffee every single morning?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wasn't a coffee addict until junior year of undergrad. Now I have to have a cup every morning.
Anyone else have a Keurig single-cup brewer?!? That thing is amazing 🙂

So how many of you guys drink coffee every single morning during the school year? I've been debating with people that its best to limit caffeine only to exam weeks. Everyone is different, however I keep getting told that caffeine is almost mandatory on a weekly basis to be the best student possible-which sounds crazy to me. Others say everyday, that once or twice a week will just throw you off. With all the controversy and confusion related to rather or not we comprehend best with or without a caffeine high, really makes me wonder how many college students, especially pre-meds are consistently drinking every morning.

Why does it sound crazy to you?

If you're operating under the assumption that caffeine as a stimulant is going to improve your attention and ability to learn information why are you only going to drink it when you're studying for exams, and not when you're learning the information initially?

If you drink coffee throughout the year, then your body would likely not respond in the same way had you only drank coffee during exam week.

I know people who drink so much caffeine that they are all but immune to its effects. During exam week, to get that extra kick of energy/attention, they had to resort to unhealthier stuff like Monster and 5 hour energy.

Wow, y'all are caffeine addicts.

I've had coffee maybe two or three times, and I haven't had a soda in over eight months.

But I do love me some adderall...

Yeah, soda is the devil............I stick to pure water, strong coffee, and good beer

You also recall information better in the context in which you learned it; context including psychoactive drugs (true of nicotine, no idea about caffeine). There's a lot to consider when you're looking at the long-term effects of coffee on your ability to learn and take tests.

Honestly, it seems a little bit silly to strategically consume coffee as a pep pill for final exams.

I drink it all the time. cup in the morning. cup mid day. sometimes random cup at night.

I love coffee. Only way to deal as an engineering student with all nighters and beyond

Well, I don't start MS-1 until the Fall but during my undergraduate years I'd drink nearly an entire pot per day. I jumped dramatically down to about 1 cup per day once I started my Master's degree and started working full-time.

One thing that'll really keep you from over-drinking coffee is to invest in a Keurig. Because the K-Cups are relatively expensive and because you only make one cup at a time, there's not a lot of incentive to inhale an entire pot of coffee.

I think you're right. But would you have to gradually up your caffeine intake to get the same effect? (In other words, are all psychoactive drugs by nature habit-forming?)

Caffeine tolerance was the worst thing that happened in my life.

I have to drink coffee every day that I have classes, otherwise I spend all day doing sleeping... 😴
I stopped drinking coffee for lunch though. Started ****ing up my GI. 🙁

I think that's because you're dependent. If you quit you probably wouldn't have that problem. I quit cold turkey and it was the worst ten days of my life lol. Ridiculous headaches for days on end.

Coffee sucks.

Why need it when you've been getting up at 5:30am everyday since you were 10? 😀

Every now and then I quit cold turkey for peace of mind knowing that I can. It only takes me a day or two of misery, although I'm also a low-responder to caffeine. 🙁

To add insult to injury... people always ask me if I have any blood in my veins or if it's just coffee coursing through my cardiopulmonary system

I like my sugar with coffee and cream.

I love coffee but go through modes.. I can go months drinking it black and then one day just decide to get milk/sugar and be doing that for months.. then go back. I'm not on the black coffee routine...during school I usually drink monster energy drinks.. they get u more awake IMO but also tolerance develops where I was drinking like 2 or 3 throughout the day and not even really get that buzz.

I've had a cup or two of coffee every day during undergrad. Recently, however, I became allergic and now I drink tea 🙁

I don't drink coffee, sorry guys. It tastes like ****, smell likes ****, and looks like ****.

Sounds like your talking about Starbucks.

If you want good coffee, find a local shop that roasts their own beans. Nothing beats a coffee made with fresh ground beans using a french press.

every morning I have (minimum) two cups of black tea with way too much sugar. If I'm working, I make a pot of coffee and (usually) drain it within two hours. (that amounts to something like five cups)

If I'm not working, though, I can last on just the tea, or on nothing at all.

Probably not at all good for me.

I never started, and don't plan to. I've managed enough ED night shifts without coffee that it doesn't really seem necessary for me. No coffee withdrawal or mornings where I "need" coffee to be functional.

Except, you know, just about any other beverage. Blech.

What is wrong with the people that get withdrawal symptoms when not having their caffeine intake? I keep hearing it from people, often women, and they just refer to a cup of coffee, like they always need to have their morning starbucks or something. And yet you have people like me that can go through a number of days of hard caffeine diet, and then either go back to regular coffee or simply do without caffeine for how ever long we want and there is no withdrawal effects such as getting a migraine.

I would think it has something to do with tolerance, but having my own experience in going from caffeine pills to no caffeine at all, I am somewhat doubtful.

^n=1

Well you're lucky then!

This weekend was the first time in... 5 years(?) that I didn't have a single cup of coffee (I usually have 2+ cups a day). I expected headaches or something, but I was perfectly fine. Now I've gone back to my usual amount, because I love coffee 😍

 so true. Starbucks coffee tastes burnt to me. Definitely support your local coffee shops! Even if you just get tea or a smoothie.

I only drink coffee when I have 8:30 classes in the morning, b/c I definitely fall asleep otherwise... weirdly though, I don't drink coffee if I'm studying for an exam or pulling an all nighter since it doesn't do anything for me at night 😕 I have to go to energy drinks then

Haha, both of my parents are major coffee addicts so I'm pretty wary. Green Tea all the way!

Coffee addict for sure. Though I've severely cut down the past year as a detox, I suppose, before Med School. The worst was drinking 2 pots of coffee/day with my friend/co-worker. It wasn't that we were drinking 2 pots of coffee/day, it was we were making these ridiculously strong pots of coffee that no one else in the department could drink.
"How many scoops does it say to add?"
"X/cup"
"yeah..." - adds 3x/cup

I know I'll be like that again... :scared: I'm drinking a lowly 2 cups/day atm.

I do that too! Nobody seems to understand it, but it makes me happy that being addicted doesn't mean that I necessarily have to continue drinking it.

Two possibilities:

1) You weren't off caffeine long enough to start the withdrawal symptoms. It can take up to 48 hours.

2) You have slightly different physiology.

I was doing that for most of the last couple months (strong pot of coffee/day). Just for fun, though. Coffee + How I Met Your Mother or Scrubs is a good time.

Drank it fairly regularly the first two years of college before I decided to quit caffeine altogether for 5 months. Love the taste and love it as strong as possible, I just don't want to have it too often so now I have a cup or two a week.

The main time I have a cup is before my weekly long run at 4am, mainly because it helps to produce a bowel movement before I run.

Lol wut

Same thing for me I don't want to build up a tolerance so any caffeine I get usually comes from C4 or Jack3d. Although I might try just taking a caffeine pill before...I used to drink coffee almost every day though.

echoing the lol wut as well.

Anyway, I started to gain a tolerance on caffeine, and that's after using shotgun/superpump/noxplode/jack3d/assault/and hemo (and that's 4 weeks on 4 weeks off stuff). Anyway, so far the best I've gotten out of said "pump" (in addition to caffeine) is using flashover by omega sports. Good stuff.

This thread has inspired me to make a pot of coffee. That is all.

My mom does not like seeing me drink anything that is not transparent......

I'm one of those people that, strangely, get sleepier when they drink coffee. I find that orange juice actually helps more when pulling those all nighters

Interestingly, after my dad had a heart attack he completely lost his taste for coffee. He and my mom both used to drink a lot of coffee, and now he can't even stand the taste of it. Weird!

I have a family member who would drink a pot a day until she underwent chemotherapy. After that her husband couldn't even make coffee with her in the house because even the smell of it would make her violently ill.

I drink a boatload of coffee, probably too much. There are worse things that you can do to your body in my opinion. Also, tea is awesome. It takes some initial investment to get the right materials, but it is delicious, has lots of variety, and is very cheap. I mean real tea here, not those little bag things.

I just got my dad one for father's day. That thing is AMAZING. I want my own now!

I used to drink tons of coffee but now I mostly stick to tea. Again with the previous poster it needs to be good tea.

Coffee doesnt wake me up. It gives me the ability to stay awake and do stuff.

Now if i chug water, i will stay up. Mostly because of the urge to pee

Yeah but those are expensive as crap and the K cups are substantially more expensive than coffee too (even if you're putting out for really good coffee beans). I'll take a $20 coffee maker/french press and use the money I save to buy great coffee.

you're wrong...

6-8 oz is healthy for you..beyond that, no. So is a small amount of daily alcohol.
Red wine as an antioxidant perhaps? Can't imagine a small amount of everclear is incredibly healthy, just sayin'
