I'll be starting my doctoral program in a month and am starting to have cold feet about it. It's my top choice school, not really my top choice geographic location. Did anyone else feel this way right before they started?

I am in the exact same situation. I think (hope?) it's normal.

Yep felt this way too. But I moved early and started working in the lab and I'm loving it so far. I've been reading a lot of literature and brainstorming ideas for my thesis with my new mentor.

I have always lived in large cities so I was really apprehensive about moving to such a small town. But they have a few cute little things like wine tastings, farmer's markets, and outdoor concerts. Plus I'm getting good use of my Netflix subscription.

I'm in the same boat...but I'm trying to keep positive by reminding myself that it's normal and that everything will be ok, even if it does turn out to be a bumpy start. We should keep each other updated on how things are going once school starts 🙂

I'm in the same boat, I'm moving from a rather large city to a smaller one and am not sure how the transition will be like. Gotta remember, you're going for the program first right

I felt the exact same way before I started my program last year. I moved from a large east coast city to a small southern town and was really scare about the transition initially, but honestly it wasn't bad at all. Hopefully there is atleast one good restaurant and one good bar where you'll be moving, if you have those you're fine. Make some good friends in your cohort, they will help get you through anything and everything. You will get so busy that you won't even notice where you are.

I am already feeling imposter syndrome and I still have a few weeks before my program starts! But I really do believe this is normal.

Contact your cohort and see who else is in town! Try to get a happy hour or something together so you have something concrete to look forward to. 🙂 Also, spend your first days on the joy of interior decorating and exploring your new area. Yelp and a GPS are your friend.

It's scary but an exciting time! I remember my first couple of months here and they were a blast. I was so nervous to move from a large, East Coast city to a smaller city farther away, but my cohort filled the first few weeks with trips to the zoo, dinners out, and BBQs.

Almost everyone I've talked to over the years says they feel that way. I've noticed that I've heard people say they feel this way, whether they got into their top choice, last choice, were wait-listed.... additionally, I have heard people report the same feelings upon starting practica and internships. Maybe its an adjustment thing...?

WOW! Thanks for the encouragement PsychPhDStudent. I can only hope I have a similar experience!
