So I have started collecting teeth and I have two oral surgeons that will throw some in a jar. Do you think this will be enough? My booklet recommended as many as possible but I think 2 oral surgeons could shell out quite a few. Should I acquire more dentists? There's a whole street down here with about 20 dentists within a mile (seriously). Yay, nay?

better safe than sorry...and plus, you can always sell your extras to slacker classmates...j/k. Congrats on being accepted.

like he said, better safe than sorry.

oh no!!! I'm a girl! 😀

I have three OMFS and they still haven't filled it up and I've been collecting since Jan (but I start in July so my times about to be up).

i'm just going to give one to an oral surgeon that i know really well. he said he could fill up the jar in no time.

Ditto to that one... one of my oral surgeons is the only practice in the county with my city being the biggest. Then I have my big city surgeon from down here. I'll add a few dentists to the pile though since I start classes in a month, but I won't need them until August.

Thanks guys!

Many schools will want you to continue collecting teeth throughout your 4 years. We were asked to get some last year just so we could work on identifying teeth in dental anatomy. Now we are supposed to be collecting teeth for our endo class next year, and then the endo part of the WREB is done on extracted teeth. I would drop off jars at more than just oral surgeons if you can. You will want a variety of teeth (more than likely), and most OMS do 3rd molar extractions. I had my oral surgeon fill a jar for me. He had it filled with 120 teeth in about 2 weeks... 100 which were wisdom teeth. I would recommend dropping a jar off at a periodontist as well, and a general dentist (only if they do a good amount of extractions). Periodontists may not collect that many for you because a lot of the teeth they section, but the ones they do collect, won't be third molars. I had a periodontist collect about 15 anteriors for me last year. So that's just something to keep in mind.

lucky! i can't wait to start dental school

ya, get as many as you can. Im an assistant and Sterilization technician at a private oral surgeons office and when the patients want their teeth we give it to them. This happens the majority of the time and I only get to put so many into students jars that I get. I also have three jars that I have to fill up so that sets back a lot of teeth for a single student as well.

Yes yes yes! Save as many teeth as you can. You'll be needing those teeth for a few classes during your years as well as for the WREB if you're taking it. I don't mean to sound stingy, but save the good teeth for yourself. You don't want to be one of those soon to be graduates freaking out that you don't have any good teeth to work on for your licensing examination.

Collecting teeth seems harder than I expect. I called over 30 dentists today and most of them either have 4-5 jars ahead of me or they don't do that.

1. Of those students already collecting teeth, how and when did you know to begin collecting? Will your school tell you to collect teeth?

2. What happens if you do not have enough teeth? Can they be bought?

Thanks
