Is it wise or advantageous to take College Algebra to prepare for the QR section of the DAT?

My school offers this course at 3 units. I need your opinion. Thanks.

I'm not sure it would be wise to take it JUST to prepare for the QR section. I guess my reasoning would be that there are a number of courses that could prepare you for that section, trig and stats being another two. But yeah college algebra would probably help.

if u need the course unit, sure why not..but u may as well study QR by yourself since it's pretty basic stuff (Sat math level)

I'm very good at math (2 years engineering college work), but horrible in DAT weird word problems and statistics questions.

Yeah I hear ya. Being good at math and doing well on the QR don't always go hand in hand. I just think you can improve by yourself without the college algebra class. Plus, my college algebra class didn't have a lot of questions similar to those on the QR.

I have Abstract Algebra and Advanced Calculus in me and yet i couldn't do well on QR. Taking a class will not help. It's a technique which needs to be improved upon and developed.

I'm a Math major and i got a 16 on QR, my lowest section. Serves me right, i was too cocky and didn't practice QR one bit. Didn't study anything. What do you know come to the exam, these questions aren't hard for me, other then 1 or 2 of them. I'm solving most of them and most likely getting them correct, now i look at my time, i'm almost half done and only 10min left. I panic, and run out of time. Had i practiced timing i would have done much better.

I would highly recommend practicing timing, i got nothing but word problem after word problem.

Probably not, working through a SAT Math book throughout the semester will probably be more fruitful.

I think what you received on your Math SAT should be a pretty reliable indicator of what you will get on the DAT.

It really is not. SAT math does not have as many word problems and timing is a lot easier. I broke 600 on the Math portion on the SATs and yet i only got a 16 on the QR section of the DAT.

The word roblems on the actual DAT are more logic than math. You just have to reason the problems aout and even if you have almost no math background you can solve the problems. Once you understand how to think logically the way the DAT does those problems are the biggest joke.

You're absolutely right. But i think they need to put in some Calculus and remove those tedious and unnecessary statistics and probability problems. Also they need to spread it out better. For example i got an exam filled with Word Problems and Stat & Prob problems. And barely any trig or inequality or geometry problems. While a friend of mine told me he got a lot more trig, geometry, and inequality and very few word problems and stat and prob problems.

Being a major in the area of Calculus of Mathematics, my trig, geometry, and inequality skills are extremely well and i do them with ease, the fact that i have to take only a minimal amount of stat and prob, makes me weaker with those type of problems.

There is a certain amount of luck involved in these exams.

I absolutely agree.

They should include GC, Bio etc and make better exam for everybody. When they generate these exams - they should design it in such a way that everybody gets similar amount of calculation questions in GC and similar amount of conceptual questions....

My first DAT was loaded with calculations and some folks I know got mostly conceptual. Would you consider that fair in a general chem exam at your own university?

Regardless whether QR is important or not - I think it should be like what you get on college exams where an instructor have 2 to 3 versions but similar types of questions (not exact).

I have seen SAT I and SAT II (even saw SAT III) in the library. Which one is it?

QR math is more of logic than math. Hm...
so then where can we get the logic problems 🙂

Thusfar, as you'll see on the forums, the QR section is much more difficult than any of the DAT prep books have suggested. They do this with each section depending on the mean scores of people taking the exam. They like to keep the averages around 17-18, so if people are scoring higher on average in a particular section, they'll make it harder. This is currently at least the case with the QR section. There were many probability quesitons and graphing limits quesitons that I was not expecting.
