Ok so I will attending college in the fall. so far what i have expected is that if i want to be a dentist, i will have no college life....how true is this statment, i know and prepared to study my *** off, but will i be studying all the time to the point i have no life....because my dream is to be a dentist but also would like to experience the college life as welll.
any advice

There is no doubt that you can have fun and good grades at the same time, youu just gotta learn to use your time wisely.

Or you can always follow my route (NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!!). I had so much fun freshmen year and got a 1.7. I just tried really hard later on to boost my GPA to a respectable range.

However, bringing up those grades were pretty darn tough though.

My only advice is time management, time management!!! That is exactly what college is about....You can still experience the "college life" without completely sacrificing the social scene, but it is difficult and one must be prepared to spend many nights not going out, doesn't mean that you can't, just that not as much as others, possibly. College is supposed to be a great experience, and it is with limitations! I am a junior and will be applying for d-school this spring and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed myself thus far. I have made good grades and still have had time to be very involved on campus.. oh this is another thought...getting involved is a great way to handle two things: meeting people and having experience to show during your dental school application....Good luck...if you have another question feel free to send me a message..best of luck!!!

This is definitely not true, at least for my college experience. When it comes to a pre-dent's social life as an undergrad, it all boils down to time management. You will hear this over and over again when you eventually apply to dental school. Obviously each persons experience will be different considering differences between schools, but I personally went to a pretty ball-busting college that had a drop-out rate of 60% because it was considered too intense and still managed to have a social life. And no I am not a robot that knows everything. I won't lie, it's tough filling up those pre-reqs but it doesn't have to destroy your life...

these days, "experiencing college life" is just a euphemism for partying and slacking.

College is harder than high school and it will require adjustments. If you go away to college, you may be away from your parents for the first time ever, and the new freedom you have takes some adjusting as well, because you're in charge of your life for the first time.

Just be smart. Learn and know your limits, but don't be afraid to push them sometimes. Try new things and relax once in a while. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But bad grades makes Jack not get into dental school.

For me, the motivation I needed was figuring out what I wanted to do. First year my gpa was 2.45 and then I turned that into 3.85 second year. I did a lot of partying first year and still do now. I probably spend 2x more time doing work out of class, but the fact I WANT high grades helps me focus and manage my time better then first year. I really don't think it should be too much of a problem for most undergrads.

College is not as hard as people make it out to be. There are classes which you can never attend, read the book and do fine. There are classes however, in which you will need to attend every lecture and pay attention as best you can. I was somebody who from the bat got the jist of college and made sure that I didn't regret the amount of slacking I did. I ended up with a 3.79 and now have a 3.9 something. You will eventually learn which classes to focus on and which classes you can barely scrap a 4.0 in. The combination of time manegment and sacrifice will do you good. Don't be afraid to deny a good party night, even to study for an hour. Its good to be in the mind frame of good focus. Best of luck, and its a good thing you are starting to think about the dental profession early.

College is not as time consuming as people make it out to be. However you will be spending time in the library studying to ace those prereqs especially organic chemistry, and physics while others will be hanging out and going to parties. Enjoy it! If you do well you will have fun. Study whatever interests you there is no specific requirement as to what you should major to go to dental school.

My mind is an iron trap. Retention is the key. Funny though, it is saturday and I am studying for about 6 tests I have over the course of a couple of weeks. Spring break 3weeks and counting...

1. Pay attention in class. Then you will minimize your studying. So many kids fall asleep in class... why do they even show up. if you pay attention in class (for me it easily cut my studying in half if not much more).

2. Pick a major you enjoy. If you hate it you wont be interested thus not do as well.

3. Most important *** Go out, hang out with friends, meet new people. Drink or do what ever. If you study all the time you will get burn out.

4. If you are good at taking tests, you probably wont spend that much time.

5. If your a good B.S "er" on short answer this again will help you succeed. Some times i wonder how i got credit on so many questions.

thats what i would recommend for undergrad. Seriously though, undergrad is a joke, just like high school, but there is much more emphasis on test scores.

For your harder classes like gen chem, o chem, developmental biology, etc just keep on top of your info. For 20 or so minutes a night review what was taught in class, and get help if needed (Something i definitely did not do,b ut would have helped a lot)

In addition to the tips above I would like to add, sit in the front rows of the class. People to sit on the back are spaced out students. Professors are more apt to notice you but also lectures are more engaging.

honestly, you can have almost as much 'fun' as your comn major friends throughout most of college, especially freshman year. Just manage your time, try to get some stuff done during the day, so you can screw around at night and remember lots and lots of people do not so great during the transition semester and step it up later on.

Of course its helpful if you do well out of the gate. I was a 3-4 night/week party hooligan freshman and some of sophomore year. I only really slowed down because it became the same old thing and my friends all started to study and work so hard they didn't have time to go out.

4) Fraternity parties are everything you thought they were.....and a whole lot more.

5) It is thought that alcohol consumption and GPA have a inversely proportional relationship.

6) On move in day, offer to help people move into the dorm, especially the opposite sex. This always helps you getting laid.

7) Even if you aren't into greek life, you should rush. The free beer/titties in your face comes only once a year.

8) Take introduction to human sexuality or some similar course. It's a free trip to the strip club and it's for school credit.

9) Save your tabs from canned beverages, they can be traded in for a keg.

10) If you are starting college with a high school girlfriend/sweetheart, do yourself a favor and break up with her.

I never heard of 9 though.

But everything else except 3 is totally clutch. You can easily get up and go to class at 8 or 830 or 840 if you went out hard the night before, as long as you get to bed before like 1ish. At least freshman and sophomore years this is really not a problem. The good news is when you start to get old and alcohol affects you more, your classes will usually start later since they aren't the huge survey lecture courses.

In fact, I used to go out hard, be in bed by 1am, the night before all my gen chem 2 tests freshman year. The professor scheduled them all on fridays at 8am. As long as you wake up youre good to go. You will probably sober up after an hour or two of test taking, so I don't recommend this strategy if you have too many classes after that early test.

I really hope you're going to your state school. If so, prepare for a good time. my advice to you is to loosen up and take advantage of being young and irresponsible, now is your chance. Girls are easier now than they ever will be.

College is easy. you can party 5 nights a week and still ace it. Trust me, all my friends did it and still graduated with honors. Just dont get too involved in drugs. A little experimentation doesnt hurt. Party it up now because dental school and your career will be the time you'll really have to hit the books.

Thus, #9 is simple math:

I had a great time in college, was in a fraternity, and subsequently partied an average of 4 nights a week-- I still got into a couple dental schools during arguably the "most competitive" application cycle. I am by no means a genius.

Go to college with two goals:

1) to get into dental school, and
2) to have the best time of your life.

If you go to college with the "I must study every hour of the day" mentality you will without a doubt get burnt out and be miserable. You will also turn out like many of the socially inept clowns that enter the health care field.

Yeah its funny watching all the nerds in the classes too. Always raising their hand and asking stupid questions. "Now would Dihydrogen monoxide have the same affects of water in a solution?"

but the best is to people watch. And you can always leave early with out the teacher connecting a face to the person who always leaves 5 mins early.

Maybe at a big school. But at my school I always sat in the back, even now in my upper level classes with 30 or less kids, I somehow end up with the seat in the back. Maybe because I don't get to class 20 mins early the first day?

I found it easy to get LORs if you go to professors office hours and ask questions. I don't mean sucking up hardcore, but if you have questions ask them not the tutors. I am now a tutor for freshman bio and since I personally have no impact on the grading, I could care less who comes all the time.

Its important to be tight with the TAs in things like lab or classes where they essentially do your grades.

start on thursdays and end on tuesdays!! I alwasy went to a thing called mic "monday intoxication crew" well many mondays and then tuesday nights are pint nights at my fav. microbrew. Sunday was my day off of course. Leave that day to get some work done and watch football.

Might work for some bio classes but for physics and chemistry I've found that it takes consistent studying and practice to be able to solve problems on exams in the alloted time.

Needless to say, the empty gaps towards the front of the class slowly filled in because they were ignored by the prof. I've got one class this semester where I force myself to sit in the front so I'm not tempted to fall asleep... 😴
