I was fortunate enough to get acceptances from two great programs right now I am trying to decide between Colorado Anschutz (Colorado spring LIC route) and UMass Chan med school and would really appreciate some input, especially from anyone familiar with either school.
I’m a Canadian applicant, and I’d prefer to stay in the U.S. for residency if possible. Cost is almost the same for me, so I’m trying to focus more on fit, clinical training, research, and match opportunities. I will have to move regardless of the school.
Colorado Anschutz – Pros
- Feels like a bigger academic medical center environment
- Strong tertiary/quaternary care exposure
- Seems to have a solid reputation for specialty training
- Good research opportunities
- Slightly more of the “classic academic surgery” feel
Colorado Anschutz – Cons
- Farther from the Northeast, which may matter later to match there
- Less connected to and relations like the New England hospital network
- 1 pre clinical year, worried about the speed.
UMass Chan – Pros
- Strong connections in Massachusetts / New England
- Broad affiliate network and multiple training sites
- Seems to have a supportive and mission-driven culture
- Worcester may be a more manageable setting for med school life
UMass Chan – Cons
- Stronger primary care/community health identity, and I’m not sure whether that matters for someone leaning surgical
- More distributed training model vs one dominant academic-center feel
- I’m not sure if it has the same level of “big academic surgery” vibe as Colorado
