Does anybody know what kind of scrubs (style, color, etc) we'll be wearing? What color scrubs are 1st year students required to wear? I need to replace my scrubs at work and figure I can save some $ if I buy the ones that are required by the school.

I have one more question. Do we have a break during winter, say around Christmas? I'm already planning on winter vacations. 🙂

yup there's a break...usually it's about two weeks...but you should wait til the scheldule comes out for sure

scrubs are this lightblue/light teal kinda color...but i am not sure you're required to where that color...the only time you will want to wear scrubs is during anatomy lab.... you can wear scrubs during dental anatomy/operative also but you can also wear your white coat.

I have put both deposits down at Penn and Columbia and I'm having a hard time picking one. Do any of you have any suggestions? [email protected]

go where you'll be happiest...just wondering are you steve? 🙂

there are a ton of posts specifically about penn vs columbia when freedy was choosing... It's a tough one because they are both so great!

Can any current Columbia students comment on the Georgian Residence?
In comparison to Bard or the Towers?
Thanks.

Hey, SillyRabbit

From my visit to CU this May... one freshman student mentioned in this order....

1. Towers
2. Bard
3. Georgian Residence

The Georgian Residence is located right across from the ER of the hospital, which can be noise even midnight. If I were you, I'd prefer Towers and Bard to Georgian...

When I visit Bard Hall, it wasn't bad at all to me. We're gonna have fun in there.

I also put both first deposit at Penn and Columbia. But I chose Columbia.
Both are great schools, and it will be a really tough decision you gotta make.
PM me if you have questions.

Good luck~

bard rooms are small compare to georgian room's.

towers and georgian you have to share bathroom & kitchen & living room (if there is one).

in bard, you're probably going to have to share bathrooms w/ everyone on the floor... and there's a kitchen on the 11th floor (and nice flat screen tv)

in the towers you have bills (housing each month, electricity etc) to pay...
in bard (and i think georgian) it's all billed to your student account so it's really easy and no bills to think about (unless you get cable).

you can always drop a few million to buy a nice place in New York City. In a couple of years you can sell it for more, that should cover the maintanance fees or you can rent a room to someone to help you cover the monthly maintanance fees...think about it, when you sell it, you get the money back, assuming you get more or the same as you paid.. it's like living for free!!!

I will sign up as a roomate. Will pay all the bills ontime 🙂
I need a housing near Columbia but Columbia most likely won't give it to me. (I am from the immidiate NYC ares) Star girl do you know anyone who needs a roomate for the next semester?
Current Columbia Students: do any of you need a roomate or know someone who needs a roomate?

Thanks I'd appreciate if someone would help.

Balki,

Why don't you try to contact Ms. Adele Selik at 212-304-5884? She is probably the right person for the off-campus option.

if you live near columbia, why don't you come by the housing office (1st floor of bard) and put yourself on the list for wanting a roommate in the towers... or you can wait a few weeks after school has started to see if there's openings (usually there are).

This is what IM doing in Philly.......bought a place, and in 4-5 years, it'll probably increase in price just enough to cover my living fees for the 4 years......

yeah. Who are you?

Hey Stp27

Have you decided your mind? Well, come to Columbia!

I'm pretty sure you've compared two schools thoroughly just like I did, but still confused, huh?

The most important fact for me to decide Columbia was challenging and adventure.

You will study with one of the best medical school students and faculty group as well as cool dental students such as StarGirl and Doggie. The first two years at Columbia is EXTREMELY demanding. If we study hard for the first 2 years, I'm confident we can achieve high scores in the first board exam enhancing to achieve whatever our future goals and aspirations are.

Also, Philly is a small city compared to NYC. I have a few friends attending Penn currently, and they complain there are not many things to do during weekends. I used to hang out with them in Philly, but found out NYC is way better. There are hell a lot of things you can do in NYC. Yeah... we definitely need to have some fun while studying.

Also consider Columbia is a little bit less expensive than Penn?

I had opportunity to study at Penn twice (the other degree was Ph.D program at Penn previous years), but I?m glad that I always chose the other.

Again, Good luck~!

NICE!
Balki, you're going to have a MALE roommate that actually cleans the bathroom!!

How does friendster work? Sometimes I realize that my friends know some of my other friends in other dental sch. It would be cool to connect more dental students. Doggie, do you mind telling me how it works?

STP,

Congrats on your decision and welcome to the family. You def picked one of the best schools to get your dental education. Could you PM or email me your email address/name. I am building a list of columbia 2008 students from SDN so that we could all go out one night before school starts and hang out. Thanks

I have cotaced her, but she told me to come and see her much later in the SUMMer like in JUly. I am planning on visiting her sometime this week again.

Thank you everyone again.

I selected those two in that order too. 🙂

Me too dentalchica...I hope I end up by one of you two girls! 🙂

ME too! But, would anyone here prefer to live in an apt by the undergrad campus on 116th and bdway? Just curious.
Also, did you guys rank Bard Hall?

I ranked Bard Hall last because I'm too used to an apartment and adjusting back to dorms with community baths and kitchens will suck for me! 😱

Same here. Community baths are just wrong!

Same here...after two years in an apartment I REALLY don't want to have to go back to wearing flip-flops in the shower. ewww....

AHHH community showers, sweet memories of my freshman year roommate coming out of the shower wrapped with the shower curtain because we took his clothes. I'm actually looking forward to it. 🙂

I emailed Dr. McManus bout text books and he said they don't use textbook and prof just give handouts everyday of readings. I thought we had textbooks.

hey sillyrabbit,

i'm gonna be looking for an apt. somewhere on the upper west side...hopefully somewhere between the 80s and 116th or so we'll both be doing the 30 min commute..

p.s. LAKERS IN 6 BABY!!!! 👍

Hey man, I need a roomate/ apartment mate, I don't have the apartment yet but perhaps we can rent look together. I visited Columbia today and there is no hope for on campus housing for me. I also knocked on some doors at the Halls and no luck there.

Anyone else need a roomate? I PM few people on this board but no one responded. Thanks guys.

Do any of you guys know when Housing Department will tell us what we end up with? I know they don't start processing housing until June, 15th.. How much longer do we have to wait to find out.. ? 😴

What kind of computers do you guys use or will get for school? I'm going to purchase a laptop soon and wondering which one I should get.

I guess we will find out about a week or two after that. I am sick of this too. People keep asking me where I am going to live.

Well the choice is really up to you, and it depends what you like. I have a 2 year old Gateway that works beautifully (but I frequently refresh and maintain it) If I was to buy one I'd get a IBM , gateway or DELL (even though lately their computers have been crappy) You can also read the reviews for them on CNET.
Other than that, just put a real perfomance Operating system like Win 2000 Pro, (not like the crappy WinXP) and you'll be fine.

I am geussing you'll end up mostly using it for email, internet and reseach.
I don't think Columbia uses any DVD books, but I might be wrong.

A week or two after June 15th.. then we should find out before July 1st, right ?! Hopefully, it's not too late to find off campus housing, if we don't get to live on campus !! Thanx for the info.. :luck:

Personally I'd get the new sony vaios coming out. They are sooooo sweet. I think they are coming out soon, maybe you can find them online.

Weighs 1.84 pounds WITH battery......sweet sweet

Aren't sony varios expensive? I wanna spend about $1500. What about an apple? I never used an apple before though. What about a toshiba?

Yeah sonys are expensive but its quality stuff and looks damn nice. For $1500 i'd get a gateway or toshiba like you said, solid quality. I personally would stay away from the Dell and compaqs.

Have you guys turned in your photo to make the ID card?

I might be also looking for the off-campus housing if I don't get the dorm assignment.. I'll wait and see....
