Hi I was wondering if you could give me some input...deciding between Columbia and Temple? I know Temple is more clinically oriented and Columbia is a bit more academic/research. Any pros/cons for each from pre-dents, especially any Canadian pre-dents planning to go to the states? Thanks so much,

Mocha

It all depends on whether you like research/academic/ or you just want to be a practitioner. if u want a little bit of both world, doing research, be a faculty member, policy making, then go to Columbia, otherwise, go to Temple
It also depends on your pocket? BTW, which school is more expensive?
Either choice can't be wrong, they're both very good school
😉

Thanks Tinkerbell, I know Columbia is a bit more expensive. I do like the research aspect of it but I know that Temple has a really strong clinical program. So have you decided where you're going?

Mocha, I don't know where to go yet.
I applied to 12 schools, and I'll have my top choice interview very soon. However, my last choice already accepted me. I'm going to a few interviews next week. Hopefully by the end of Jan, I'll know for sure.
I know for Canadians, it's a bit more difficult, bc you can't borrow a lot of money, so eventhough you are willing to take out loans, you might not be able to, or with outrageous interest. So, you have to choose wisely.
If you said you like research. Do you have any research experience to know what it's like? Do you visualize yourself doing part-time research and part time clinic?
If you're not that crazy about research, and your loans have huge interest (12% from some Canadian banks), you know that you have to be extremely good and confident to work on your own right after you graduates, and you have to be extremely efficient too, to run your office. So, you know where to go if that's your case.
It's tough to turn down Ivy League. I'm glad I don't have to choose between an Ivy League and another school. Ouch, wait until Penn answer me. That will be hard
Good luck
😀
P.S: I know there are lots of Canadians at Temple, how about Columbia?

Mocha: I'm Canadian and I am planning to attend Upenn for dental school. Least to say, it's gonna be very expensive. If you can, get a credit line rather than a loan so that way you only pay interest on what you take out rather that the whole loan at one time. Get a RBC professional student credit line. Just bring your acceptance letter and they'll take care of you. From my experience, RBC gives the most money. Eventhough, you'll probably have to go get a loan from CanHELP if you don't have an American co-signer. The interest rate is horrendous though. Temple is a lot cheaper than Columbia. Just make sure you can come up with the funds before you ultimately decide which to school to attend. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply Acid Etch. I know tuition in the states is up there but I have the support and am encouraged to choose a school based on where I really want to go rather than cost. So do you have all your funding up front currently? Was cost a consideration when you made your decision? I met a number of people from ON in the states but no one from BC. Seems like the East Coasters are more attracted to the states.

Mocha 🙂
