Columbia P&S separate word file submission OPTIONAL or NOT?

Columbia supplementary app. allows you to upload one additional word file. Generally, when applications have optional essays I always write them. Is this one of those cases where I may be the only applicant who hasn't submitted an additional document? Are they expecting something like a publication or a thesis?

Go back and read this more carefully. My understanding is that an uploaded document is only to be used to clarify academic issues that cannot be adressed anywhere else. For example, Columbia's secondary only lets you declare one major, but I was a double major. Therefore, I am uploading a document that states: "Please note that my undergraduate career at XYZ University included a double major in Basketweaving and Trout Fishing. Thank you."

Can anyone else respond to confirm that my understanding of this is correct? I am actually about to submit this secondary, myself.

I submitted a paragraph on what I'm doing in my year between undergrad and med school. If I didn't have that, though, then I wouldn't have put anything. Of course, it's not like I've been accepted yet, so this is only my take on it.

edit for froggiebet: I thought that there were two document upload spots, one for academic things only and one general one. It's been a while since I did that secondary, though, so you'll have to refresh me.
