If you had the opportunity to attend either schools which school would you attend, why or why not...

Sorry if this bugs the hell out of some people, never thought I would post a topic such as this??? but would love to hear opinions from others thanks, Seouldds😕

Just for the wonderers out there, the final cost of attending either of these schools is exactly identical, just to make things a little more interesting 🙂

Columbia 😍

While I haven't been to either school, just based on the impressions I have formed of these schools from SDN, I would go with Pacific.

Reasons: I love California, NYC doesn't sound very appealing to me. Graduating a year earlier I see as a huge benefit. Also it just sounds like the students at Pacific are generally happy and try to achieve a cooperative learning environment (there was some thread awhile back where a UoP student mentioned that one classmate who was a biochem major would have a Q&A session before biochem exams. Stuff like that is really cool).

Whereas at Columbia didn't they switch to pass/fail because everyone is trying to specialize and it was getting really cutthroat?

Again this is all just hearsay from these forums but that's my .02c

Not having grades at Columbia's nice. All you have to focus on then are the boards.

I would probably go to Pacific mainly because of their 3-year program.🙂😀😉

I love your expertise here bo... using the wonderful references of OTHER SDN posts... anyways....
First of all... comparing NYC to Cali is purely personal preference... Maybe I dislike California because I don't like that I'm on a fault line and feel that I'd eventually be somewhere IN the Pacific OCEAN. I dont ,but its preference just the same. Some people (millions in fact) think NYC is where its at... Secondly, you haven't applied, visited, and needless to say attended any of the schools, but your adeptness at reading SDN posts makes you an expert as to the cutthroat nature of CU? Firstly, get your facts straight for the OP, we're on a Pass/Fail/Honors system... I feel there is an element of competition, but by no means would I deem it 'cut throat'... As to your UoP Samaritan, I can give you numerous examples of myself and my classmates sending out reviews, transcripts, notes, things they found online that correlate to class, and many more instances of us helping each other... Not once have I felt that someone was truly gunning in a "I'm gonna pry your fingers off the ladder of success so I can make my way up" sorta way. Not to say people don't try and push themselves to do well...

But i'm not sure about any of this, since I didn't find any correlative data on SDN... Every school has their positives and negatives, UoP is three years which is sweet, but look at the whole picture and think before you make claims... Needless to say, I love it here and think I'll be well respected when I'm through... I'd rather take it on in four years for sanity purposes though I respect those that do do it in three...
Anyways, feel free to send me a PM OP and i'll answer whatever you'd like about CU (the school to which I am familiar)... As I think Bo forgets, the idea of SDN is to try take away some of the enigmas and misconceptions of these schools and the process, not make it more complicated by repeating things that were already said, though at least it was qualified as hearsay...

and "my .02c" should be 2c or .02d... I hear thats a question on QR...

whoa there, chill dude.

If you turned on your post reading adeptness switch, you'd see that he did preface it with the fact that he hasn't visited the schools but based off what he read, he'd pick UOP. That's what HE'D do not what he's advocating the OP do.

He said he likes Cali and to him, it just sounds like UOP is nicer. It's just his opinion, man, that's it and that's all, just an opinion.

So the students at CU aren't cut-throat; they just jump down everyone's throat... oooo. I like that one.

You might want to remember that line. I hear it's on the boards.

It's just a forum so calm yo-self. mkay? 😀

And as far as the biochem major who does review sessions: yeah, I've talked to him. he's awesome.

In regards to the "UoP Samaritan", remember, this isn't just some "Joe Classmate", the guy holding these things is literally the biggest gunner in our school, possibly in the entire city. He has literally no incentive to help his competition, but he does anyway out of the sheer goodness of his heart, and because it's the Pacific way.

I also wouldn't be so hot to jump on someone's back for posting their opinion, then go on to spend 10 oages extolling your own.

Tell you what OP, let me finish up some finals and then I'll give the board some good reasons why armorshell picked UoP over Columbia 😉

I'd suggest checking out the first section, entitled "The Full Stop, the Question Mark and the Exclamation Mark" before you start trying to take on someone else's inter-grammar. Also check out where "Ellipsis" is. Yeah, way at the freaking bottom...

I'm glad to hear about your positive experiences at Columbia. I guess the Pacific students are just more vocal here. I thought my original post was sufficiently qualified so as to avoid giving people the impression that I had any kind of "expertise" (other than spending too much time on SDN!). I'm sorry if that wasn't the case.

I actually do happen to be hip to ellipses and know their proper usage. But I use them anyway... I'm that cool... But before I write a 'oage' to the grammar king/queen riddled with my own SAT words and MLA pages, I was merely defending misconceptions and unduely founded conclusions brought upon my school... As you can tell from my past quotes, I am normally more than cordial and very willing to help any SDNer in need, but I will take no prisoners when defending my school... Sorry I came off like a jerk... I'm a little ornery as it is finals time... But good luck OP in your decision and all the other posters with finals... Its back to the sub-occipital triangle I go...
Pete...

AdidasPete: No harm, no foul. Thank you for sharing your insights and I understand that finals can be very stressful.

Seouldds: Here is another thread on the very same topic from several years ago, I hope you find it helpful: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=64308

Edit: Reading through the previous thread I noticed that the topic of Ortho specialization was a concern. My orthodontist's son graduated from UoP a couple of years ago (02-04?) and completed an ortho residency. He's now working with his father at one of the busiest ortho practices in Albuquerque. I've spoken with him a few times and he was very personable and encouraging. If you are worried about specializing- okay I won't open my yapper cause this topic has been addressed so many times. Either choice is fine imo, and congrats on your acceptances! Your hard work has finally paid off.

Dude what made you soooooooooooooo aaagressive/jerk-like???? Did you take HGH?!
lol!!

Anyways, gl on studying.

[This was a fun break from the cutthroating here at CU, lol!]

I think Pete, like most of us who go to Columbia, is just a bit frustrated with all the comments people write about our school without even attending a day of class here. Columbia is a good school, people are very nice and helpful and we do get to enjoy (to a certain extent 🙂) New York City even though we are in Washington Heights.
Regarding which one you should choose depends whether you want to be GP or specialize, if you like West or East Coast better, where would you like to practice, where is your family etc?

back to anatomy....cb and pete good luck tomorrow!

...its all about the cheapest school, actually go to the one that no one wants to specialize that way you can be the only one specializing in w/e you want(and absolutely match for it)!

lol!

Sham, thanks, gl to you too (and Pete), cool talking to you as always!

I would vote Pacific, for obvious reasons...though I am the first to admit it isn't a perfect school and am more than happy to discuss it over PM, not on forums.

I did not apply to Columbia but imagine it is a fine school too.

As for the back and forth, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly the fangs come out in anonymous forums. Really, all Addidas did was see something negative about his school and decided to attack back rather than let it stand. If I'm not totally off, Armor, you do that quite a bit. Still, a grammar correction? That's beneath you.

I think you broke more of the Official rules of the predental Forum rules than you abided by in your response.

Go ahead and look and make a tally

I know you want to and are going to anyway

go ahead

I dare you.

I reserve the right to maliciously correct grammar in response to a previous grammar correction.

It's like Hammurabi's code, the punishment must fit the crime 🙂

As far as the fangs thing, the internet was brought into existence for 2 reasons, in order of importance to the inter-community at large:
1. Porn
2. So people can bark at each other

I will also admit I'm terrible about letting people have the last word on roughly any matter. For a good example of that, see this post.

that's it, jeff? is that all you got for us after 2 weeks of finals? 😛

didn't feel very deep thought to me ... but who am i but a measely predent? that might have just been the ultimate answer if not something more.

[This was a fun break from the cutthroating here at CU, lol!]

I actually ran over to Yankee Stadium last week and had Pettitte and Clemens' trainer shoot me up with some HGH to get through Anatomy this morning... good thing they don't require randomized urine specimens here... And by the way, sorry I super-glued your anatomy notebook shut, a guy's gotta cut-throat when a guy's gotta cut-throat...

Public Service Announcement... The ellipses used in the prior post have been approved by Ron Paul...

Come on, guys, there's no need to sabotage each other! I replaced both of your exams this morning with leftover butterfly ballots from the 2000 election. So, stop the cut-throating; it won't help you anymore.

42...It's an old joke. It ends conversations and questions, and Armor made it up/stole it/rehashed it.

2 weeks of finals? we only had 3 days of finals and I got sick the first day so I spent most of it coughing in my bed wondering if I had the energy to study...as soon as it ended...I found energy again...go figure.

in that case .. i just outed myself as a big giant nerd. 🙁

I had some deep thought about it and decided I'm don't mind; as long as you bring your towel.

Eh, we had 3 days of official finals. I think you're forgetting about the 3-4 exams and practicals we had in the lead up.
