Columbia Post Bac acceptance rates

Dear all,

I just came back from an info session at Columbia University and according to their statistics, they claim that they will take students who are perceived as "potential" doctors and if they are fit to get through the post bac program.

I did a BA/MA program in Adolescent Education and Mathematics with a 3.6 GPA... if it's a combined degree, do they just look at this GPA? My transcript does not differentiate the BA portion of my GPA, it only combined both BA and MA grades as one singular GPA (Including undergraduate and graduate subject courses).

I also did some shadowing/ and some clinical volunteering work at a non-profit HIV/AIDS free clinic for low-income AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) communities.

I did not graduate from an Ivy League college nor did I take any pre req courses for pre-med.

I am about two semesters shy from graduating with my masters around late May early June of 2013.

- What are the chances of me getting into the Post Bac program?

- How can I improve my application

- Any biases I should be aware of?

After Graduation in 2008 I worked in Japan for 3.5 years as a translator / English teacher / web and graphic designer.

After that I moved back last year in February and began working full-time training ex-felons in basic computer and resume writing skills at a NPO. At the same time I took introductory BIO and A&P at the local state college getting A's in both classes.

Additionally, I volunteered 125 hours at the local hospital, was accepted into a week-long program from the University of Nevada School of Medicine shadowing 3rd year medical students.

That's my story, and I was rejected.

That's strange, what were your SATs? A 3.6 and that background would still make you competitive for even the top programs. It is curious that you were rejected.

1160 in 2003

I'm going to Georgetown PBPM instead starting this fall though. Still not too bad.

Columbia goes as far as checking sat scores for the post bac program?? It's been so long since I took my sat's....

They either want GRE or SAT scores AND they want your high school transcript... I can kiss Columbia goodbye. They SAY that they want to only verify that you graduated high school and they don't look at the grades, but let's be real for a second, HOW WOULD ANYONE GRADUATE COLLEGE WITHOUT FIRST GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL?! So frustrated.

I'm kind of happy that I'm not going to Columbia after all. They have horrible reviews by people who have been through the program. Some people say it's fairly good, but the majority of the reviews I have read say that there are better options. It seems just like the name is all that it has going for it. It could be me trying to justify not getting in though.

Gee.... now I think I'm going to consider CUNY Hunter > Columbia...

At least it'll cost 4k instead of 40k a year
