Columbia vs Imperial College, UK

Hello,

I've been lurking in this forum for a while now, and I am really amazed at how helpful you all are!

Now I need some help with deciding on offers. I am now considering Columbia (MPH, Epi) and Imperial College, UK (Masters in Public Health). Cost-wise both are similar, but the Imperial program is just 1 year long.

Does anyone know what Imperial's reputation is like? Is it comparable to Columbia and is the British MPH widely recognized in the US? And will it give me a leg up if I apply to medical schools in the UK afterwards?

Imperial has an excellent reputation all over the world. Its an amazing school in terms of academics and alumni network. On the other hand, Columbia is a good school as well.

I got in to the MPH program at Imperial last year but decided against it because I didn't want to relocate to UK. I am preety sure you wont have a problem with the MPH degree being recognised in the US. As for medical schools, British medical schools are quite hard to get in to, I am not sure if the MPH will give you a leg up over other applicants. Both schools are amazing and both are in ridiculously expensive cities 😀

Imperial College all the way... don't look back (unless of course being close to your family is priority, which I understand, but if its not GO!!!!!) Their reputation is inimitable. My father went to the Imperial College on a common wealth scholarship. One of the worlds best schools. Please go there, you'll get a reputable and extraordinary first class education. Go!!! Oh man, im so excited for you, congrats!

hello confusedmph, you dont have to be confused! you need to weigh your options here. If mph is a start up degree for you to go into medical school later, columbia will be a better option, but if it is a final degree for you, imperial maybe be better. In the UK mph is not considered when one seeks admission to med school, but in america, it sometimes is considered. Secondly you need to focus on reputation in terms of your degree. Columbia has an excellent reputation among public health schools, imperial doesnt- if it was london school of hygiene and tropical medicine, which is the no. 1 public health school in the world, u should have gone there without a doubt. Imperial is a good school but more so with science and technology, which public health is none. Finally america is a better place, in terms of giving you endless opportunities to grow. the Uk is very restrictive. so i will say consider these and make a decision. I was also accepted at imperial college london-tanaka business school for international health management, but i turned it down for the main fact that the UK is quite restrictive. Columbia and Hopkins took me but I have chosen to go to Emory. I hope this helps.

And is the reputation of the MPH degree that important if I plan to pursue a medical degree afterwards? The shorter length of the Imperial degree is a little appealing...

imperials reputation is not that bad, its just that in comparison to columbias school of public health. i will take an Mphil in cambridge over an mph in columbia, cambridge is the 2nd top sschool in the UK after oxford, and an mphil is an academic degree so its a double win situation.

i dont know if anyone can help me ...but i have a choice between kings guys campus...or imperial college.....to do a Masters of Public Health..im looking to do medicine afterwards....
