Hi, it's me again (a person who posted last week). Update: Shortly after receiving Dean Frantz's letter, I called the admissions office and scheduled an appointment with him. Well, I just had my second interview with Dean Frantz, and at the end, he gave me an acceptance packet! I am so happy! Anyway, thanks for wishing me luck, Coltrane and others. Hope to see all you guys in the fall!

Sweet! See you in August. And both of you recent acceptees should get on our P&S class of 2010 thread in the Allopathic subforum. Vik, ivy and I are getting lonely over there.

Lets take this to the P&S thread in allo. I think if I were still on the waitlist, I would be irritated reading about this kind of thing on the waitlist thread.

Keep the hope alive and write a lot of letters and make a lot of phone calls.

Are people continuing to call Dean Franz? How frequently? I feel like I have nothing more to say other than please don't forget about me - I really want to attend.

I haven't called him yet - I'm scared. 😳 Do you (or anyone else who wants to answer) think it's really helpful to call him? It just seems like from what other people have posted that conversations with him are brief and sort of formulaic.

I've written a letter of intent, sent an update, and gotten an extra LOR, but should I call too?

i called a month ago and it seemed almost like he was reading a script and it was very difficult to get in the points I wanted...that's all I know as far as my case.....oh and he closed with the famous we'll keep you very much in mind...i was hoping for the "you're accepted" close but you know...

For the love of god, I wish they would just do a ranked waitlist so I knew if I actually stood a chance.

Well realistically they cant do that. Dividing the waitlist into thirds is as close as they can I think.

Just think guys, we've been 'waiting' for close to 1 year, what's another month or so?

as we say in Hebrew 'katan aleinoo' - its a tiny deal/hurdle/problem for us!

Have they divided the waitlist yet? I wasn't informed! (Or is that coming on the 15th)?

Anyone?

haha. this wait is killing me. how many more seconds until May 15th? anyone know?

On the Waitlist movement thread, it seems Columbia hasn't really moved people off the waitlist after 5/30 (at least according to SDN records 😉 ). What does this mean? A lot of people should have been hearing already? Waitlist movement ends fairly quickly at Columbia (as opposed to, say, Creighton, where someone got off on 8/8)? What do y'all think.

I spoke with Dean Frantz yesterday. He sounded a little stressed, to be honest, though one can understand that given the time of year and the amount of work he has (and tough decisions to make).

He mentioned the usual, that he'd keep me very much in mind and that there was little I could do between now and when decisions are made. He was polite if noncommittal, (again, understandable).

Of greater relevance for those of us still anxiously awaiting word from him was this little tidbit: he stated that, contrary to years past, there has been extremely "little movement from the wait-list" due to very few people giving up their spots at P&S prior to May 15th. I care not to speculate as to the significance of this to those of us with dreams of moving to Washington Heights.

Best wishes to all in this overcrowded boat adrift in the Alternate Sea.

When I spoke to him back in early March, when no one had had much time to withdraw, he also said something about applicants holding onto their acceptances for too long and that waitlist movement has been coming later and later every year. It probably doesn't mean anything and may just be Dean Franz's way of telling us to relax and be patient. Or, it may mean that in years past a lot of waitlist spots had been given out by this time, but this year there will still be a lot more to give...some wishful thinking here...

Gahhh, thanks for the info, you saved me an awkward phone call. 😎

any word? When does this list start moving?

it's basically in constant motion if you are one of Dr. Frantz's chosen few. otherwise, it's as stagnant as a pool of murky water.

Hey Guys, this is my first time posting on this thread but I have kept up on it from time to time. Anyway, I got a call from Dean Frantz yesterday and was accepted off of the waitlist. I am definitely going because Columbia is my absolute first choice. When he called me he said something like "the waitlist is beginning to move." So hopefully some of you guys will hear from him in the near future. In case you are wondering I wrote three letters to Dean Frantz and met with him for a second interview. So keep on writing and calling and hopefully I will see you guys in August.

What is this statement based on?

the statement that the waitlist is moving as evidenced by people getting accepted in the past month or so, but him still saying to people (myself included) that things are moving slower than usual..blah blah blah

and also the fact that some people have been told that he's not doing 2nd interviews this year but clearly several people have been able to do them (and have been accepted from the waitlist).

Damn. I guess I'm part of the stagnant pond then.

so far it seems like very few people have gotten off the waitlist. . . It seems likely significant movement happens from May 15-early June. (this is from monitoring last years thread). . . I am still optimistic that there will be a lot of people getting off soon. The method of notification is definately a phone call?

Tomorrow is the big day...do you think more calls will go out tomorrow or it will be a couple days for the adcom to calculate open spots?

Well, I've been fortunate enough to recently have a lot of things come to fruition that have been added to my application that are probably the new highlights of my app. but with no call yet I'll probably reside in this eutrophic 🙂 s"tangnant pond" until sink. Good luck eveyrone.

last year the first posts of acceptances were a few days after the 15th

another thing to keep in mind is that Dean Frantz's policy is basically to grant second interviews to those who did NOT interview with him the first time (I fall in this category and had specifically asked, and given that reason for the denial). So I don't think we can't focus too much on the whole "stagnant pool" idea.

Just remember, everyone: we're going to be damn fine physicians if we made it this far (wait-listed at Columbia, admitted elsewhere).

Cheers,
Greg

anybody hear anything from frantz on paper recently? has he been responding to recent update letters with new info about the waitlist? or is the current info based on just phone conversations?

out of country and internet is expensive so i have to be quick

parents said i got a letter in response to recent update pretty generic as usual but said under "active consideration" this time don't know if that's the latest form letter?

my phone does not get reception(i'm in the middle of the ocean) and I hope i'm not missing a call (doubt i'm missing anything 🙁)

Best

Thanks for the update, StacyCA! I'm sure Frantz will beam you up from the ocean if the phone doesn't work. In seriousness, if you were concerned about him getting in touch, you can probably designate a contact person to respond on your behalf. Either way, good luck!

The waitlist is definitely moving. I spoke with Dean Frantz yesterday (5/16/2006) and will give you details once I confirm.
By the way, if you're a CA applicant, I think you should strongly express to him that you want to be in New York... he mentioned that to me as a part of why he was hesitant to admit me (since I am from CA).

Best of luck! and PM me if you have questions.

I just called the admissions office to ask about waitlist movement and was told that there have been very few people taken off of the waitlist so far and that things have been going much slower this year than in past years. Today is also P&S graduation, so apparently Dr. Franz has been very busy recently and won't spend much time on waitlist issues until later this week. So don't fret just yet if you haven't heard anything - I don't think many people have.

So now I am very confused about the Columbia waitlist...Before I thought it was one of the most active, i.e. tons of people get off of it. On interview day, lot of the first years were saying that like 1/3 to 1/2 their class got off the waitlist and that being waitlisted meant you had a fairly good shot at acceptance if it was your #1 choice.

But, looking back at the 2003-2005 Columbia waitlist threads, it seemed like it hardly moved and there were a lot of anxious people waiting who eventually never got an acceptance. They all said that Frantz reported, "this year the movement is slow compared to years past, blah blah blah, overaccepted.." It seems to me that this is the norm rather than the exception...

Whats the deal with Columbia waitlist? Maybe being on it is not as good as I had first thought...

i'm starting not to believe anything anyone says. it's much too stressful. on the bright side, i'm done with school/work and i get to plan my trip to Germany for the World Cup. anyone doing anything fun during our last summer of freedom?

I feel you on that. It doesn't matter how little or how much the waitlist moves until I get the call. On the bright side, I'm going to Guatemala and Honduras for a month this summer!

Why does he feel the need to be deceptive, or at best very unforthcoming. I was told that by 5/15, we could get a decent idea of where we stood and that I should call then. So I did, and he told me that b/c I had expressed so much interest I was in a relatively small group of waitlisters under active consideration. Frankly, I think he says that to anyone who expresses interest (ie anyone he ever talks to). Bah.

drhouse, you might be in good shape. For the rest of us, however, it might be a long and fruitless wait. I just spoke to the Dean Franz directly and he was little more forthcoming about the waitlist. He said that many fewer people have withdrawn than in past years and that he thinks things will probably be pretty tight this year. There apparently is a pretty small pool of people to whom Dr. Franz had virtually promised admission who would be selected first (I am not in this pool), and that it looked like he may not even be able to select all of those. It's not looking real good for the rest of us...

I have to agree with this... I've written several very strong letters of intent with updates, etc. and the most I've gotten back is a short, curt form letter saying "we will keep you in mind." I feel like there is a small pool that Dean Frantz is much "friendlier" with who will get picked first, and if you are at the bottom of the list, there's nothing you can do to move yourself up.

i don't know how many of you have read the previous years thread, but this is exactly the way last year's thread went. it's like reading from a script.

I think he decides which speech to give to callers dependent upon the color of his mood ring (blue, I think is better than aqua, but not sure). He told me there were always plenty of spots opening up in June and July, and just to keep waiting. He certainly didn't promise me a spot, so I don't know what the hell is going on.

and many more people were accepted than Franz indicated? If the first years all told us that so many people in their class were waitlisters, then there must have been a lot of waitlist movement lasy year, regardless of what Dean Franz told people. Maybe he just says that to the people who are at the bottom of the list so as not to give false hope...

PhillyMD, what games are you going to this summer? I'll also be in Germany this summer. A group of four of us were picked by lottery for the USA TS7 tickets. I can't wait for the summer!

i'll be at US v. Czech Republic and US v. Ghana. in between, i'll be going to Munich and Berlin. also, anyone watching the Champions League final right now? some controversial stuff.
