Columbia Waitlist 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone requested to be removed from the waitlist, recently, as a result of acceptance to preferable school or lack of movement?

maybe he was telling the truth about the waitlist not moving this year. damn. at least I got into UC Irvine so if I dont get into columbia i can stay in california!

Dean Frantz is on vacation until June 12th, so don't expect any waitlist movement until at least then....

I got in off the waitlist at the beginning of may right after I went in for a second interview w/ Dr. Frantz (my first interview was with another professor).. he actually gave me the acceptance during the interview, much to my surprise.. columbia was my top choice so I was thrilled.. Dr. Frantz gave me the opportunity to interview after I had sent about 3 lengthy letters (sent directly to him) and 2 cd's (a piano recording of mine and a cd of videos of my dancing). Dr. Frantz responded really positively to these correspondences (especially the piano recording since he is a pianist himself), and when I told him I would be in new york for a weekend, he invited me in for an interview.. eventhough a spot had not yet opened up, he offered me an acceptance.. it just seems like they want people that are really passionate about attending columbia which is another reason I wanted to go there so bad.. it just got the feeling that all the students there absolutely loved being there and were getting a full medical school experience.. i think getting off the waitlist comes down to pure tenacity and showing that you have a passion for going there (i know, sounds obvious).. they especially love people w/ diverse extracurriculars and interests (both my interviews were purely about extracurriculars and outside interests, nothing to do with medicine really) that will contribute uniquely to the color of the student body.. goodluck to everyone!

awesome, congratulations! As far as loving people with diverse extracurriculars, I don't know, it seems like they just love piano players.

Yea from the forums it does seem that the pianists and rugby players do get a lot of love but when I had my second interview with Dean Frantz we talked mostly about my involvement in Greek life (no not how we get drunk every night hahahhaha). I think you guys should continue to pursue Columbia as much as you can no matter what kind of vibe you are currently getting from Dean Frantz. He really wants people who are very interested in Columbia. It took me three letters and a 2nd interview to get an acceptance off of the waitlist. Best of luck!!!!

Yo Dhookup,

Are you class of 2009 or 2010? Thanks...

You Columbia waitlist people are the lucky ones. I wanted to go to Columbia badly, but got rejected after my interview.

hey i'm kinda new to this forum so let me know if i didnt post this right. i'm waitlisted at columbia as well and have been since march. it seems some of you had second interviews with dean frantz. how did you go about asking him? i sent in two letters and will soon be sending another, if i tell him i'm going to be in new york for a weekend would that work? i'm only waitlisted at schools, no acceptances and a little worried right now. thanks

i just told him in my last letter that i would be in town for the weekend and part of the week (i think he only does interviews on weekdays), and he called me a few days later to schedule a second interview. Keep in mind that one of the posts above says that he will be on vacation until June 12th and then he will probably have a whole stack of letters to go through so it might take a while for him to respond, so take those time issues into consideration. goodluck!

Hang in there waitlistees. Everyone in my lab last yr came off the waitlist in June, July and Aug. Harvard does their waitlist at the end of June (40% or more come frrom the waitlist). I bet some will leave Columbia for Harvard.

Anybody call Frantz lately and get the doomsday report... i.e. they are already overenrolled, this is an unusual year, blah blah blah? I called today, 6/12 and got that story. So depressing.

someone called on my behalf about a week ago and Dr. Frantz returned the call, i guess from vacation, and told my caller that things were very comp. this year and i'd have to wait and see...

Do you guys really think he's on vacation at this time of the year? I don't know...

everyone,

the level of dismay and frankly near-paranoia is astounding on this thread. "is he really on vacation" or "doomsday"...sheesh. we're all in the same boat here. The man has a right to go on vacation, and what better time to take one than when there is virtually NO change in wait lists around the country, not to mention the applicants for next year are busily completing the AMCAS and any questions can be fielded by his office staff?

I spoke with Dean Frantz this week, and he was genuinely perplexed by the unusual overenrollment. He's a good guy and doesn't deserve the speculation posted here. Think about how qualified all of us on the wait list are...you don't think he'd rather have a class size of 180, so he could accept more outstanding candidates? I'm just impressed he's done this as long as he has, essentially having to short-circuit dreams on an annual basis while still trying to bring the best and brightest to P&S with fierce competition from other schools of medicine.

I wish all of you the best; we got close, and that's likely where we'll finish. Fluky years happen.

I doubt this'll help anyone, but for what it's worth I withdrew from the Columbia waitlist.

Good luck everyone. 🙂

Awesome post🙂

Firstly, my apologies to those of you reading this in the false hope that there has been waitlist movement at Columbia-so far as I know, that has not happened in a while.

That being said, I mailed Dean Frantz on 6/12 and received a postcard in reply that reads, "The Committee on Admissions acknowledges with thanks the communication we recently received from you."

Ever since I was waitlisted, whenever I would mail Dr. Frantz, I would receive a letter back from him saying, "We'll keep you in careful consideration, etc." And any time I would speak with him on the phone, he was always fairly positive aboutmy chances, even when others were posting on SDN that he told them there was no chance whatsoever. When I called him roughly 2 weeks ago, he told me that they are currently overenrolled by about a dozen, and he does not expect to see much more (if any) waitlist movement.

I have been operating with the mentality that the Harvard, Hopkins, etc. waitlists will soon see lots of movement that may open up some spots for us at Columbia. Is there anyone out there who is in a similar situation or has any new insights into the mysterious process that is P&S admissions? I'm just trying to figure out if Frantz is truly cluless about what may happen with the waitlist, or if he is trying to drop some hints on me. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I will be going to Columbia next year and a couple days ago we received an online orientation guide with the list of all the students currently in the class of 2010. There were 160 names in total. Judging by the MSAR figures, that means that Columbia is currently over-enrolled by about 10 students.

I'm guessing that Frantz does not expect much waitlist movement since the roster was already sent out.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I figured it was some insightful information.

Anyone else clinging to that last shred of hope? Maybe Dean Frantz made gross errors in addition, anything? I like P&S, a lot.

good luck

I withdrew my waitlist spot two weeks ago. Best of luck to you guys! I know it's getting down to the wire, but Columbia is awesome. I'll be sending good thoughts your way!

I called Dean Frantz a few days ago, and he said they are still overaccepted by 6 and it's safe to say that there is 0% chance of me getting in and I should make other plans (and i was one of the people he gave a second interview to and said i was at the top of the list!). Anyways, he did say it's a unique year and nothing like that has ever happened before in his experience. Not that it made me feel any better...oh well.

I got this exact response about 2 weeks ago. Columbia was one of 4 schools that I was waitlisted at and called all at the same time. EVERY other school was completely vague and one secretary wouldnt let me talk to the dean who personally gave me her business card-I was told that "she doesnt take these kind of calls" My point? I could not disagree more with the people who complain about the way Columbia admissions works, there is one man in charge and he always took my phone calls and was always honest with me, even going so far as to tell me when it would be prudent for me to make other plans. Other schools ended the conversation with statements like "remember, we can accept you right up until registration day" That's just plain rude, even if it's true.

Anyway, if anyone in charge of admissions at other schools reads this, call up Columbia for advice on how to treat applicants.
