Anybody heard about Columbus University in Panama? I'm not sure how old the medical school is but the university itself seems to have been around since 1994

i might consider it because of the low tuition cost.. i simply cannot get a loan for US or other better Caribbean schools (i'm Canadian without a co-signer)... so it seems like a good idea if it's actual a decent school

i'm a very independent learner so i don't care about great classes.. i just want a school that's not a scam!

please advice if you know any information

thank you

Never heard of that school; however, Panama would be a nice country to have a medical school for US and Canadian students. Spanish is the primary language there but english is spoken by many in Panama city (the capital). The currency there is US dollar; however, cost of living is way cheaper than the US. For instance, one can rent an appartment for $250/month. Overall, Panama is nice country and I had a good time when I was there in may 2009. If the degree from that school will not restrict you from practicing medicine in Canada and you are a self learner, go for it.

How much is the tuition per semester?

The tuition is around 5000 per semester but there is no MCAT requirement .. which is not a good sign

I have decent stats .. ~3.4 GPA, balanced 33MCAT.. M.Sc. with a publication and almost 4.0 grad GPA (+ more or less the usual volunteering and activities).. but no love from the US this cycle so far and the lack of money to go to a better Caribbean school is frustrating me

You are right... no MCAT requirement is a bad sign; it means that the school will admit almost anyone.

probably not even almost lol

but that doesn't concern me very much right now as long as it's an institution that will allow me to write the USMLE.. they say that you do the last two years in the US.. so.. that should mean it's recognized..

i guess i need to call them up
